I've been getting a bit more back into rimfire shooting the last year or so, after last year coming into a convertible 9" Heritage SA. Great lot of fun for relatively very little money.

Picked up a 22/45 since, and back in my youth my very early production Henry lever was often with me in my teens, joined by an early Ruger Standard Pops (my father) got me for my 18th. I was passed his Marlin 101 single shot, and had thought I was set on .22s - then those were lost in a theft, and for about 5-6 years I don't think I fired let alone bought a .22 of any sort.

Well like I say last year came the Heritage then the 22/45 and recently I had been wanting to get a nice, accurate-enough-for-target, easy-enough-for-field, .22 rifle again. A somewhat 'traditionalist' camp gun for light duty and light targets, occasionally light hunting.

I decided I wanted to try for a bolt action these days while keeping myself open to other options. My original hope was for an older but well known tube-fed gun, but these were - when I could find them - usually longer than I recalled, much like the Marlin 60. So I had just about decided on a CZ Scout when this came up locally today:

Mid 00s Winchester (made-for) TOZ-78 .22 rifle which feeds from 5 round (shown inserted) or 10 round magazines. The original TOZ 78-12, from what I understand, began in the 1980s and continues today, although very slightly different in stock appearance and apparently with a less interchangeable magazine than one would expect.

Winchester didn't bring these in for too long but from what I gather they have a well deserved reputation for accuracy with a strong design and well made internals. My example came with the factory irons and a bit dirty as you can see - pardon the laundry lint - but next to nothing in the way of wear.

I'm debating putting a nice little 3-9 rimfire on the rail or leaving it open irons, though I'll likely take it out soon with irons just for fun. :)

For a very sub $500 rifle, this one looks to be a lot of fun.

Me too! Definitely shows a trace of it's 'Russkie' heritage there, but aesthetically I think it works really well on a nice little sporter like this, especially as it was designed to look sleek and simple rather than a war mod.

Then ten round magazines I've seen stick out a bit garishly, but I found the 5-rounder (supposedly) OEMs at Numrich at a pretty reasonable price. Ordered a handful of those since they fit flush and really, aside from tin-can fun how often does one need ten rounds in a bolt in the woods? :)

Never seen or heard of that rifle. Definitely has a European flair to it. Very nice wood. Vortex makes a really nice rim fire scope. Warranty can’t be beat.

A "lady friend" bought one of these new when they were available, for squirrel control in the bird feeder. I have "controlled" many squirrels with that gun. I tried some target ammo in in a few years ago, it wears a 3X9 scope and at squirrel control distances of 25-30 yards, it will consistently keep all shots in one ragged hole with the target ammo. I am super impressed with this little 22LR, You have a Keeper!!!!
