New Sport-Buttstock recommendations

I finally picked up my first AR. This weekend I got the Sport II and so far feel very happy with the purchase I made. I'm not planning to go crazy with upgrades (we'll see how long that lasts), but already I am thinking about a new buttstock. I don't like how the factory one feels loose and rattles. I am thinking of a Magpul, but am not sure where to start. Not looking for anything fancy, just a basic replacement for the collapsible stock that includes the buttpad.Any recommendations along with why you chose the one you did?
I may end up changing the grip also, but want to spend some time shooting it first so I am also open to any thoughts on that.

For Magpul I'd guess the CTR is their best seller (a guess, I have no real idea). Simple, not overly expensive, and has the friction lock. I have an STR and an ACS-L and would buy both again for the checkweld they give. By a slim margin, my STR feels better than the ACS-L, and thats like just because of the slight added surface of the storage tubes (that I'll never use). I imagine the standard ACS would be the same. One thing about stocks, there is no shortage of stuff to choose from. I chose the Magpuls simply because I wanted the friction lock feature. One on a Sig, one on a Sport II. Both are completely solid when the lever is locked. Zero play.

As for the Grip, I like the Hogue beavertail, which is good for me because they aren't expensive. Ton of options out there. Watch youtube videos of all of your choices to get a better look at all of it.

Look at www.Luth-AR.com stocks too. I took my stock grip, ground off the finger groove and added Talon grips. It's been the most comfortable for me so far.

I have their MBA-3 and love it. No rattle as after it gets adjusted, you can snug down a set screw to kill any movement. MBA-3 Carbine Buttstock | Luth-AR

For my uses an adjustable stock is not a high priority and A1 stocks are the length that fits me best but are hard to find at times. I really need to find a modern stock,thanks racer x and kodiakco.

I Like The Magpul CTR & Have 1 On My AR,As stated agove it has The Friction Lock to eliminate any Play & Is Reasonnably Priced.

If you want light weight check out the
mission first tactical minimalist stock, I really like them and you can add a cool paracord cobra weave to them if you want (check YouTube).

Otherwise as others have said can't go wrong with a Magpul CTR.

I use the minimalist stock without paracord and love it, never had an issue with stock catching on anything. It only see range use but I picked it because it's light and fits tight. You actually have to work it a few hundred times before it will slide perfectly but that only takes a few minutes.

The other reason I liked it was for the built in rotating QD sling mount.

I just added an ACS to my Sport model and it's an improvement over the factory "rattler". Taking me a while to adapt to the narrower butt pad as I had a SOG pad on the factory butt.

it also has a removable bottom cap, for a small storage area..

The grip seems to fit very nicely, firm etc.. it is a semi hard rubber, Which I would liken to the feel of a Car tire VS the softness of say, and inner tube..

Certainly feels a heck of a lot better on the hand then the stock grip.. to say the least!

tinman931, before you change anything you should at least put a couple of boxes of ammunition downrange. You might find the OEM adjustable fits you just fine in spite of the looseness.

The rattle only matters when playing with the rifle in your living room.

Considerations would be things like sling attachment points, cheek rest shape and some have adjustments for rise, weight considerations and some have storage.

I have a Magpul CTR. It has a "friction lock" which keeps it from rattling on the receiver extension tube but the only real advantage over standard is QD sockets for my sling.

And if the rattle is all that bothers you, a piece of stick on velcro, the soft fuzzy side, attached to the receiver extension will take care of the rattle and looseness.

The rattle, so to speak, does not bother me, but i do probably spend more one-on-one time on my couch with my AR, then a normal person would.. LOL!

I installed the STR on both my 15 and my 10, I liked it that much. Bonus is the little storage tubes meant for batteries mostly.

The "rattle" is a psychological thing. I wouldn't tolerate anything that rattled on any of my other rifles, so it bugs me on my AR15s.

When shooting prone, it didn't prevent me from hitting steel out to 400 yds with a red dot sight.

Half the fun is the hunt, so I can see myself going down the YouTube rabbit hole watching reviews

the buffer receiver extension thingy on the sport/sport II, is mil spec dimensions..

right on.. if ya do decide to go with it, I'd suggest trying each of the options/combinations, and each time, grip it as tight as ya can! for a short spell, then see/feel where it may kinda be hurting your hand, then try the next combination and so on, until you find the right combination, that seems to feel the least painful (so to speak) while gripping it very tightly..
squeezing it real tight, will simulate a lighter grip for a much longer period, and help to determine which combination conforms to YOUR hand the best..

sorry if that wording was poorly written.. LOL, but you know what I mean, it wont take long to be able to tell which is the ticket for ya man..
