I went to my local gun shop yesterday and picked up the new TLR-4 Light/Laster for my compact gun and it's awesome! I did notice that the laser has red lines on either side of it when projected on the wall and wondered if that's pretty normal for a laser of this type and caliber. It's my first experience with one so I just wasn't sure. I guess I thought it would be more pinpoint than that.

Looks like it could be a little dust or debris in front of the lens. It really shouldn't diffuse like that IMO.

I didn't think it should look like that either. I'll try and clean it somehow and see if that makes any difference.

Something is not right. Go back to the store if possible and try another.

Glad to know its not just me. I'll be heading to the store to see if I can exchange it this week. I also emailed Streamlight to see what they say so I'll post their answer when I get a response.

So I went back to the range today so I could have the guys take a look at the laser to see what they thought and most everyone said that what I was seeing was pretty normal distortion for a laser. As for Streamlight, they were very fast in their response and said they would be willing to take a look at it on their dime and sent me a shipping label so I could send it back.

I'm torn because I don't want to send out my new toy a couple days after purchase but I feel like the laser should be better than what I am seeing at such a short distance. Of course, there is the possibility that I just need to accept that what I am seeing is normal and move on. I know this is a weird comparison but I have $5 handheld lasers for my cats that don't do that which is why I have a hard time thinking it's normal.

You'll feel better once they take a look at it. At least then you'll know for sure if somethings just not right.

Customer service is a reason to buy a Streamlight. The Crimson Trace that came on our 9c does not have that line, it is just a single point, so like the others said, it could be a dirty lens, or maybe a scratch, so if you can't clean it off, send it back.

Before you send it out, I would at least aim the laser at a white colored light switch from varying distances. Then, try aiming the laser at a dark, flat and smooth surface. It is tough to tell the distance and paint gloss/surface texture from your wall in the picture. A dark, flat and smooth surface will give you a better idea of what is actually coming out with as little disturbance as possible.

So I talked to Streamlight today to see if they got my TLR-4 and they had already sent me out a replacement! The guy I talked to couldn't tell me exactly what the problem was but he said it definitely should not have those lines. Really glad I sent it in and got a new one coming.

Thank you to the OP for the pic, even though it says compact I was worried about it fitting on that dinky litle rail and the trigger guard not interfering with the switch. Looks like it will work out just fine.
Just ordered one for my M&P 40c. Good to hear that Streamlights Customer service is good too.

That's complete nonsense. I'm willing to bet they just didn't want to swap it out for you. Glad to hear you got Streamlight to take care of you though!

Sorry to hear about laser issue. I can attest to the normal toughness on the TLR-4. I've got one on my 40FS and at first my dumbass installed completely wrong. Used wrong key and and didn't even line the key into slot but rather off the front. Anyway, fired 10 rounds and the light flew over my head behind me and rolled 3 stalls down. Not even a scratch, light and laser are fine.

Gained some common sense and understood why there are different keys after! At least I learned to use an accessory rail and luckily I bought a durable product. Highly recommend the TLR-4.

TLR3 v TLR 4

I'm looking for a light/laster/laser for my M&P9C. These TLR models look good as I'd like to have it rail mounted. Being relatively new and just purchasing the M&P9C. Any thoughts / recommendations on either of these models. Mainly target shooting but also self defense.
