New to Forum, Asking for Help

Hello, All-

I'm new to this forum, and would like to ask how to identify a revolver's age, model, and anything else. It is a 4-inch barrel, hand ejector revolver that seems to be nickel plated from the factory. It has "Smith&Wesson, Springfield, Mass. U.S.A." and "Patented Feb. 6.06, Sept. 14.09, Dec. 29.14" on top of the barrel. The serial number is 637217, stamped both on the grip bottom frame and the cylinder. It is chambered for S&W .38 Police Special.I inherited it from a long deceased family member, and know little beyond this about it.

Is anyone able to assist? I really would like to know more, if possible.

If I had to guess, it's what is called a Military and Police model (M&P) in .38 Special. Someone will be able to narrow it down much closer but that serial number is probably in the '30s, if I had to guess, and if it is the model I assume it is. Post photos if you can.

That serial number is in a broad range for M&P models. 1915-1942 to be exact. Some pictures of the firearm might help narrow it down some. At least we could see if we are searching the right model.

Welcome to the forum with that serial number my notes would suggest 1930-31 as a possible ship year others with better note will be able to confirm, or correct this. It certainly would be in the early 1930's. but only a factory history letter will give the exact ship date. Post some pictures please.

The 1931 (+/-) timeframe is a good guess for that serial.

We would indeed need photos to assess condition and originality of the gun, finish, and stocks.

Include a picture of the flat section of the underside of the barrel with the serial.

Good advice and ballpark dates above. Do note, however, it is not likely marked SW .38 Police Special - just SW .38 Special. These guns were produced in the millions because they are great guns. If it checks out mechanically, don't be afraid to shoot the snot out of it with standard 38 special rounds, preferably lead 158 grain semi-wadcutters. Do be prepared for how well it shoots.
