Hello from South Dakota! I have several S&W questions I'm hoping you guys and gals can help me with.

My husband just purchased a Nightguard 10mm revolver, I think it's model 310(?). It came with 2 full moon clips and his question is if he uses the clips, can he fire .40 S&W in the 10mm? It appears that is what the clips are for, to elevate the primer end so it will come in contact with the firing pin.

Next question, same gun. He wants to order a leather belt holster for it. I'm not familar with what frame it is, and I've looked all over the 'net (DeSantis, Galco, etc.) and I'm lost!

Last question: I have a "NEW" Bodyguard 38 with the Insight laser. Again, I'm confused as to what holster to order. I have a beautiful DeSantis SOB for my S&W .357 Magnum, but the Bodyguard 38 doesn't quite fit correctly. I thought they were both J frames, but again, I'm totally lost.

Great forum you have here, and I hope to become an active member~

Thanks in advance for any help! :):):)

The moonclips are actually meant to be used with both 10mm & .40 S&W. You should be able to load the 10mm without the clips, but without a rim on the cartridge, they'll be difficult to eject.

The 310 should be an N frame. Not 100% correct, but your new bodyguard .38 spl. should be a J frame. Just buy holsters according to frame size (or listed model #) and barrel length. Also to consider the nightguards come with a pretty high front sight. A generic N frame holster may not work. It would be adviseable to order a holster specifically made for the nightguard.

Your .357 is either a K or L frame if a 6 shot. If it's a 5 shot, it's a J frame. If your .357 is a 5 shot J, and the bodyguard doesn't fit, you may need a holster listed specifically for the bodyguard. Also to consider is that J frames come with different barrel options. Some have an ejector shrouds and some don't (covered or exposed ejector rod). This can also effect holster fit.

Edit to add:

I see Galco lists holsters specifically for the .38 bodyguard, so it may not be your typical J frame.

Let me add...don't be confused by the Bodyguard .38(new with laser) and the older hump-back J-frame centennial that was called the "Bodyguard". I don't think the new Bodyguard is a standard J-frame, it might still be too new for most production companies like Galco,Bianchi and such to provide holsters.
There are holsters available on the S&W website that will fit the 310NG, (which is an N-frame)however...I would use the search function provided on this site and do some exploring because there are a lot of forum members here that make exceptionally good products. And you will probably also find some info on what holster will fit your BG38.
Hope some of that helps!

Read your manual. It should tell you if you may fire .40 from a 10mm.

I've looked online and am not certain which manual applies to the model 310.

In the Revolers - Modern Style manual it does not show .40 as an acceptable use in 10mm. If that is the proper manual then .40 may not be used in 10mm.

Note, I don't know much about 10mm guns.

Welcome to the Forum. I don't know about your particular guns but for sure someone on here will. Kyle

Common folks, remember to welcome new members!

Any 10mm revolver can safely fire .40 S&W as long as the proper moonclips are used. They use the same bullets but the .40 S&W cartridge case is shorter. Keep in mind that there are at least two different thicknesses of .40/10mm moonclips. If one does not give the proper headspacing, try the other.
