I bought a new to me 17. It has some holster wear but seems to be in good working order.
Toad67, a friend who I have bought from before saw this and told me about it. He said it was too far for him to drive but in my backyard. It turned out that an hour away is close enough.

$600 seems like a good price in today’s market. Serial number K376341. If it belongs in the earlier section, please feel free to move it. If someone has a born on or shipped date close to this, I would appreciate knowing it.

Your K-22 probably shipped in 1959 or 1960.

Here are some with nearby serial numbers:
K375657, a Model 17 K-22 Masterpiece, shipped in December, 1959.
K376764, a Model 14 K-38 Masterpiece, – shipped in February, 1960.

The Models 14 and 17 were issued in the same serial sequence. Neither of them shipped in serial order. All this does is give you a ballpark period, but it is likely to be close.

K376341 was completed during 1959---along with those from K350548-K386804. As to when it was shipped, that will be documented by a Letter of Authenticity from the S&W Historical Foundation---see their section in this forum. All that without a single picture---which is most certainly alright, because I dare say pretty much all of us knows exactly what it looks like----not counting any wear, tear and abuse it may have suffered over the past years---and with any luck at all, it'll look like it just came out of the box!

It is becoming extremely difficult to find k-22s on the market, I picked up a 17-1 in a pawnshop recently for 700. It is a beautiful example and i discovered it belonged to a doctor in town. He died and his widow traded it to a longtime employee who sold it at a local pawn shop for a fraction of what its worth. I was not so lucky, but am happy with it.

Hi, just to add to the figuring, according to Mr. Jinks, my 17 no dash # 33183X left the factory on October 1958 being delivered to Stoeger NYC.
Regards, Ray

I know seem to have birth year guns for both my brothers but mine eludes me. Oh well. Thanks for the extra information.

Glad it found a good, new home. I needed it like a chicken needs a wrist watch, but found it hard to pass up. If it was a bit closer, I'd be showing it off myself, glad to see that you got it.

I've never owned a "birth year" gun either. I've been close. All around it as a matter of fact. I thought I finally had it when I picked up a "pre" 17, K-22 a year or so ago. "The Book" checked the S/N as likely 1952.

Then the S/N was checked with the historical society. According to them it shipped 12/51. :) Close, but the hunt continues. :D

I found three birth year guns so far, all lettering to 1947, but no birth month, or the elusive month/day/year gun...I'm within two months on two of them, and the search continues...:D...Ben
