I just won this on gunbroker. I know it is probably sacrilege to hard chrome a 27-2, but since I was not the one that did it, I don't feel too bad. I also probably gave too much, but I thought it was cool and wanted a shooter.
My question is, it looks like the rear blade sight is messed up, what would be the correct replacement?

This is my first S&W
Thanks

Welcome to the Smith & Wesson Forum! It appears that the only damage is to the rear sight BLADE. Those are easy enough to replace. Your best bet is to find a local gunsmith who already has the proper tools to make the replacement. If that fails, you can contact Brownell's and ask for all the correct tools to effect the repair yourself.

Best of luck with your new Model 27.

I like it and I think you did OK on the price. If I ever found a beater 27-2 or a Python, I would do the hard chrome thing also. I hear that finish is tough as nails.

If you decide to replace the sight blade yourself check with board member Toolguy. He sold me one.

It was easy to replace, but I probably got lucky. When I took mine apart the windage adjustment screw un-threaded from the nut pretty easily. A lot of times it won't and you will snap the screw - meaning it has to be replaced too. So if you decide to do it yourself, start by taking it apart first - so you know for sure what parts you'll need to buy.

There are good u-tube videos on how to do the job....

It looks like the sight body has spread. If so, you will probably need a complete rear sight, unless you can squeeze it back together.

Either way, that's a nice looking Smith.

I'd plan on replacing the entire rear sigh assembly as it appears it was either knocked into something or dropped somewhere along the line and damaged to the point of replacement IMO. The rest of the gun looks great!

The good news is rear sights are readily available and not too expensive. Wait 'till you actually have the gun in hand, verify and then order what you need.

I've always thought the full topstrap lines were beautiful on a model 27. The crosshatching is something new I believe.

deluxe 357 magnum N frames (meaning not Highway Patrolmans) have been checkered on the top strap since the Registered Magnum.

Can anyone tell me if those are likely the original grips or at least the same type as the originals?
Serial number is N477xxx
Any other information you want to give would be awesome as well. Like I said, this is my first S&W.

Those football targets are period correct for your 27.

That is a good looking gun, man. That hard chrome look much like my nickel model 27's. I think you got you a good deal and a nice looking gun! And it should give you a lifetime of enjoyment too.

Yes, I agree with everyone. That is a beautiful model 27, and should make a great shooting gun, and at a very reasonable price. I would wait til I had the gun to evaluate the damage to the rear sight. If you have a trusted gunsmith, I would let him do the repar. It is not all that difficult, but unless you have the correct tools, and know what you need to do, you might run into problems.

Congratulations....and Welcome to the forum!!

Best Regards, Les

Looking back in the pics posted in the auction of the rear sight, I think I would simply try replacing the sight blade first and see how it works out. The sight blade is relatively inexpensive and easy to change, so you can simply do it yourself at the house. S&W sells the different height sight blades, as well as Brownell's and Midway and you can look up on the net on how to change the sight blade out. Be aware that there are a couple of small parts in the assembly that can spring out when you back out/break the windage screw to remove the old sight. S&W sells the sight blade kits for $11.

Received the gun today. It is much better than what is shown in the pictures. I think I can just replace the blade.
Thanks everyone

I replaced the rear sight blade on my 27-2 a couple months back. It was not particularly fun. This is a 5" gun and replaced with the .160" sight blade which gave great results at 25 yards (I have no idea if it is the correct one).

I broke off the screw, then learned you need a S&W sight tool to remove the nut from the other side. I broke both bits trying to take it off, but managed to do so and tighten it back on.
