I had been watching the pawn shops and gun shows for a couple of years now for a clean example of a Model 28 four inch with a reasonable price tag. I finally found it last month and parted with $400 to bring it home.

Today I was near Cabela's and decided to stop in and browse the used gun racks. Long story short, this S prefix 28-2 followed me home for $299. Even a blind hog finds an acorn once in a while! It even has a very nice set of smooth target stocks. it dates to 1964/65.

Sounds like you did well on both of them.

I am amazed at the Cabela's price. At the store near Chicago most of the used handguns seem 25-50% over gun show prices.

Great finds WP. Was the Cabela's 28 in the Gun Library? I don't think I've ever seen a S&W go so cheap (there)! You can find many 28s going for $400-$500 but many of them aren't worth a durn. Finish, bore, etc. I try to buy every decent 28 I find.

The 28 is my favorite Smith and I'd be a liar if I didn't admit to being just a little jealous! Congratulations!

The Ft Worth Cabelas is a funny store, it's like Jeckyl and Hyde on gun pricing. Most of them are priced way high, but once in a while you run across a bargain.

For example ... Kahr PM9 on the used shelf for $699, while a new one in the next case is $669. They have a Thompson Encore pistol in .243 Win with a scope for $399. I'm not into these at all, but that seems like a good price.

This 28 was out on the regular used gun racks. They must have just put it out, the salesman said "I haven't seen this one yet". It's far from perfect, has some honest blue wear in the usual places, and some light freckling on one small area on the cylinder. But it's tight, the bore looks pristine, and it's an S prefix. I doubt that these grips are original to the gun, they are not numbered.

You can't go wrong with the Model 28 ...and now you have 2 of them! Great price on your newest addition - and very nice stocks.

Nice grips as well. I'm in the same boat as everyone else....my local Cabela's wouldn't dream of letting that gun go at that price....even after haggling.

It's there, just doesn't show up well with my lousy photography skills.

And this makes THREE model 28's for me, I also have a six incher.

Congratulations on the great purchase. I don't have any major gun stores around me and finding a used S&W isn't going to happen. I would have to drive to Little Rock 70 miles away to look for decent used guns.

I Love the grips by the way.

With that luck I would go and buy a lottery ticket today....Nice gun and grips
