New to me 4553TSW Range Report

Took my new to me 4553 to the local indoor range today. I had some problems with it, but S&W took care of me (see my similar thread http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-...ols/179035-new-me-4553tsw-slight-problem.html)

Anyway, I took 150 rounds of various 230 grain ball ammo and the weapon functioned 100%. This is my first DAO gun, and I had expected the trigger to be like the DA trigger in a TDA gun (hope that makes sense) but it wasn't. It was surprisingly nice, and I liked the consistent trigger pull.

Aside from shooting low and a bit to the left--which is probably me--I really liked it. I'm looking forward to getting some more range time with her and maybe eventually working her into my concealed carry rotation.

The pic below is semi-rapid fire (range has a 1 shot/second rule, which I try to observe ) at 7 yards. Like I said, I think the low left is me.

I need to get some more mags.....one just isn't enough...

The trigger,contrary to what one might hear is quite good.

Nice.

The low/left is typically a result of tightening all the fingers of the hand during trigger pull, if you are right handed. Often emphasized with a DAO pull.

I'm a righty, so that may be it. POA was much closer to POI shooting 1 handed for some reason.

I would say that with just one hand you gripped it tighter than with two; thus your other fingers were all ready tight so pulling the trigger didn't make that much difference.

Dry fire with a penny sitting on top of the front sight. Don't make the penny fall!

By the time the penny will stay in place, you should be all fixed.

I've been doing the penny trick for years, it isn't much of a challenge anymore

I think i was holding the gun higher/straighter out with a one hand grip. It doesn't help that with the carriers the target "sags" down, so in some ways the plane or angle you are aiming on is downward. Hopefully that makes sense.

This is my first 3rd gen DAO (I have a Shorty 9 and a 4006) and the sight picture seems different. Both my other 3rd gens seem to shoot to where POI is right at the top of the sights. In other words, the gun shoots to the top of the sight. This 4553 seems to like a 3 dot covering the POI instead of below it. I suppose I can always add a higher front sight post, but I'd rather practice more first

Doing the penny trick with a DAO trigger shows a highly educated trigger finger, way to go.

Now just train the other three to behave and you should be good to go.
