New to me 5906 cleaning question

Wellll... Plenty of Croil and PB Blaster, check. Access to fancy vise with hi-tec plastic jaws, brass and plastic drifts and other tools, check. Hammers large and small, brass and dead blow, also check.

Finesse?... ummm, is that a French word?

Yes.

It means swing that sledge hammer like you are trying to drive a railroad spike through an anvil, without hitting your fingers!

Well ok then... I'll just order a new sight now, LOL. Is this what I get for rescuing unwanted firearms??? The needy and neglected dogs I adopted never required this kind of intervention, and they do a good job on home defense too.

Those fixed rear sights are some rugged little chunks of steel.

I've beat the ends of brass and aluminum drifts to hamburger, but I've never damaged a sight.

Not sure you'll get much mileage with the dead-blow hammer. :D

I used a thick piece of rawhide, with piece of 1x2" under all of
it, to keep slide centered in jaws...and torqued em down good.
Keep an eye on slide, between hits, to make sure it's not shifting.

Thanks for the tips, I really appreciate all of them! I was surprised to hear I should just try to hammer it off. I did hit it pretty hard, but with the smallest hammer I have. I try not to break my toys before I use them, LOL.

I don't think I need to tackle the rear sight for a while. The firing pin and magazine disconnect plungers seem to be moving freely. Only reason why I took the safety lever and firing pin out, was because of the amount of dirt on the frame. That was what started this thread. I think I will just shoot it for a while this summer.

Grips can be difficult , have pistol decocked hammer down push back on bottom the the grip . You may need to pry a little with some type plastic tool. Then set pistol upside down muzzle away from you and pull out both sides to clear tabs from frame .

Yeah, finally figured it out. I also found out the 5906 has a little space to insert a screwdriver or plastic tool between the frame and grip to start it on its way. The slot is 5mm long and about 1/2 mm wide, so if you can't budge the grip after taking the pin out, that's what it's for. Just fits a small flat blade screwdriver with 4mm wide tip, or one of those little plastic tools that come with cellphone repair kits...

I always find these things out only after I break a nail... :D

That little hole in the base of a 3rd gen wrap around grip is not just for a lanyard loop.

It is there so you can insert the grip pin for leverage when pulling back on the rear of the grip.

Since sight removal has been mentioned..........on S&Ws, looking from the rear, the sights come out left to right. Install right to left. Exact opposite of practice with Colts.
