New to me 686 no dash (Oakland PD) 4"

I almost walked out past this one, I wasent looking for it and felt as though I didnt need it, But it is a pretty darn clean 686 4" barrel with Oakland PD on it,,,,, It's mechanically very tight with no issues that I can find, Looks like it was well cared for and the barrel and cylinder shine like new!!I would have left it where it sits, BUT the owner likes me and he gave it to me,,,,,,, Well kind of I think.. How does 300 out the door sound?
I have never looked at this model before so I dont really know much about them,,,
WHat do you all think of these, And how are they?
It does not have a lock.

And yes I know that the rubbers have to go away, But they do give it a certain vintage look.

You got a good deal if the gun is okay. The M-686 may be the most practical general-use .357 revolver ever made. The barrel length that you have is the best for service or other open holster wear. Concealed carry is naturally more difficult. It is a superb house gun.

But this is a strong gun, intended to handle .357 pressures better than K-frame .357's.

I think you'll be very pleased. And the Pachmayr grips on it are wonderful in the hand. I use those on most of my open carry revolvers.
They fit my hand beautifully, and don't get banged up like wood grips will.

I was with OPD until 1981. At that time we were issued model 66's with no engraving. I would love to pick up a 686 marked "OAKLAND PD". If you ever want to sell I'm your buyer.

BTW. I just checked with a friend who had one issued to him, and he later bought it when they were retired. He confirmed they were marked like yours.

Since it's a "no dash" you should check to see if it's received the firing pin bushing modification that these models were eligible for, although I'd say that any PD worth it's salt would've had this done. It'll have an "M" stamped on the frame near the serial number if it's been modified. I'm a fan of wood grips generally, but those Pachmayrs do give it that authentic early 1980's police revolver look.

I know you will never get to this point, but please let me know if you ever want to sell it. I made a separate post that I was looking for one. My dad gave me one about 25 years ago, but it was stolen during a move across the country. I have not found one yet.

Not too many Oakland PD marked guns out there. For a long time Oakland has had an official policy of destroying "surplus" guns as they may be used in crimes if they are sold. About the only ones out there are guns purchased by retiring officers. I'm sure Oakland wouldn't do that either but CA law requires them to sell their issued duty pistol to retiring officers if they so request.
