Hi, I've always admired the Smith & Wesson 945 Semi-auto, but finally bought one in as new condition at a gunshow today. It's a model 945-1 and serial # RSA28XX. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, and doesn't look like I will be able to for several days as rainy weather appears to have set in for a while. Just curious, does anyone happen to have any idea as to how old it might be? Secondly, any advice on maintenance etc. would be appreciated. I did a quick cleaning and removed the grips for inspection and noticed a lot of heavy oil under the grips, and there was a little tarnish under them. Just curious, is the stainless steel used in these pistols subject to rusting/tarnishing? I'm not sure if the heavy oil was used by the former owner, or if it came that way from the factory? It doesn't appear to have been shot very much at all. It sure appears to be a very well made pistol and I'm anxious to give it a try!

Oh, one other question. What about dry-firing, will that harm the pistol? Thanks!

The 945 is a great gun you will enjoy it. The 945-1 was released in 2003 and reintroduced in 2005. I purchased mine new and when i cleaned it I did not notice any "heavy oil" on it. The 945 is easy to clean. It has a spherical barrel bushing that takes some getting use to. Just be sure to use pleanty of oil on the barrel and bushing. Do not force the bushing take your time and learn how to do it right. I always use snap caps for dry fire. Enjoy ragman.
