I just picked up my Model 60 from the FFL today. I'm stoked! I'll get some pictures up when I get home tonight, but I was hoping someone could help with a date on the serial number. It is R132290.

I picked up a little leather pocket holster, some speed strips, ammo and snap caps too. I'm loving it so far.

Thanks in advance.

John

1974-1977 R100000 to R190000 is as close as I can come from the S&W Standard Catalog 3rd edition. Others will probably come along to narrow it down. Nice Model 60.

Nice! These are one of my favorites. Picked up a NIB 60 with a R143XXX serial number a few weeks ago to keep my shooter company. I believe Inusuit is right - 1974-1977.

Hey all,

Thanks for the comments and information. I was really excited to receive this classic piece of history. It's just a couple of years younger than me and it's still in great shape. I took it all apart yesterday and cleaned it thoroughly. The action is smooth and lock up is nice and tight. I can't wait to get it to the range.

So if I wanted to add to my collection (M686 and M60 shown), what would be the next logical piece to purchase. I want to stay with the .38 and .357 calibers but I've seen some 45acp chambered revolvers out there too. Is there a 9mm? I really want a 686 in 6"/.357. Something about that model just screams "Take me hog hunting! Arrrghhh!"

Congrats! I've been looking for one of those for a while. really difficult to find in California.

...just noticed the 101st Airborne, me too! A battery 2/31st F.A. 1987-89...Air Assault!

Ha! Small world. HHC LEC 101st MP Co Air Assault! 94-95.

Finally found a Model 60 for myself. Not pinned but it's stamped "CHP" (California Highway Patrol)

Congrats! Sorry for the late post. It's been a very busy year thus far and probably going to get busier.

Hope you enjoy it. Mine is a great little shooter. Another one that will never get sold.

Enjoy.

Hi johnspark,

Congratulations. You've bought a great gun. Some consider it a classic. At one time, it was the standard off-duty weapon.

I've owned one for over 30 years. I used to carry it a lot, but I haven't in many years. You'll find that it's not fun to shoot with 158 grain +P loads. I could not imagine firing a .357 Mag round out of a Model 60.

You might want to think about buying a speed loader for it. It might be a good idea to practice loading in a dark room it with a speed loader.

I have an IWB holster close in style to the one you've posted. It does make carrying it a lot easier. Many times, I'd stuff it in my waistband on my strong side w/o a holster. It is an easy gun to conceal.

You've done well.
