Found this beauty today. Thought it a no-brainer at $499, especially since I have a particular weakness for 4" tapered barrel target N-frames. It is a model 625-6 Mountain Gun in .45 ACP. Came with the box and papers, as well as 12 full moon clips, six of which were a pack of Wilson Combats. As an added bonus, no lock! The gun is a twin to my 4" 624 in .44 Special! Serial number is CDZ5xxx. The box endlabel gives a product code of 100934, which according to SCSW, was a run of Mountain Guns made in 2000. Oddly, SCSW says they should have been up to the 625-8 by 1997, even though my gun is a -6. Maybe they were using up frames? Anyone have any idea how many of these were made? Have there been any other runs of .45 ACP Mountain Guns? My SCSW is the 2nd edition and only goes to 2001. Any additional information and comments are appreciated as this is my first Mountain Gun. I love the feel and balance of this revolver as it is as close as I can come to what a 4" Model 1950 .45 Target would have looked like if it had been made (I know they were mostly 6 1/2"). Here it is:

I am a big fan of the 625's. That one would be a nice addition to my battery and the price was excellent.

Good score!

You done GREAT!!! I paid about $600 for mine, about 5 years ago.

IMHO, this is the best fightin' revolver around-.45 ACP, stainless steel, round butt, and reloads with full moon clips. What's not to like?

Congratulations on the purchase and I love my 25-2 as it's a blast to shoot with the full moon clips.

Great Find!

N-frame is no. 1,

I've been keeping an eye on the small runs of Mountain Guns for quite a while. Yours was part of the only batch of .45 ACPs unless you want to include the 500 1994 .45 ACP Springfield Armory Commemoratives which were decorated pre-MIM Mountain Guns without the mountain name on them. Your 2nd ed. SCSW has a picture of one of the commemoratives. We recently had a thread asking how many of the 625-6 Mtn. Guns were made in 2000. No one knew. The 3rd ed. SCSW doesn't help. It has a picture of one but other than its caption there is no text about your gun. S&W .45 revolver dash numbers follow no pattern so far as I can tell. Some times .45 dash numbers indicate whether a gun is .45 Colt or .45 ACP like in the 25-2 and 25-5, and some times they represent an advancement in engineering changes. 625-6s can be pre-lock pre-MIM .45 Colt Mtn. Guns, MIM FL .45 ACPs with a lock, pre-lock MIM .45 ACP Mtn. Guns like yours, PC .45 Colt Hunters and other things. I just purchased a 625-6 like yours from member Markuda for quite a bit more than you paid. It has a red ramp and white outline rear but I think those were changed from all black. I should ask Markuda about that. I like the color on the sights and I bought it to shoot so I don't care if they aren't original. 1950s style 4" tapered barrel N frames are about the best looking S&Ws and make great belt guns to boot. Like you know, other than the 1980s .44 specials, prior to Mountain Guns they were all rare or at least scarce. A collection of all the calibers and variations of Mountain Guns would be challenging to put together but a lot easier than a collection of 1950s originals. To borrow a line from an old potato chip commercial, "I bet you can't eat just one".;)

I have a three inch 625-3 and while I love it, they are right, it won't be your last... I would have snapped that up in a second!!! I too love the tapered barrel on the N frame. I would love to see the 624 and the 625 in pics together.

Nice buy and a great gun. While I dont shoot the 45ACP in any S&W revolvers I do shoot it in some custom Colt revolvers and I think it is one of the greatest revolver cartridges ever along with the 38Spl.

The Mt.guns are great!!!!! and in 45acp is the way to go. The only N-frame guns I have are 45acp...625-2 5" and 625-3 4"...now if I can only get my hands on a 3"!!!!!!

All I can say is, I want one! I have owned a .44 magnum and a .45 Colt Mtn gun and let them both go. The only one I now own is one of the original 7 shot .357's. They are very hard to find. Mine is the only one I have ever seen in my area. You got a great gun at a steel.

Great catch at a great price. I like the mountain gun much better than the full lug barrel on most 625s. I never did like full lug barrels.

I have it's twin!

I have it's twin, right down to s/n and product code.Probably made the same day.I always thought MIM parts would be a turn off but this one has them and is one of the smoothest S&W i've ever felt!!
I got mine for$600 and worth every bit.Have a love afair with 45ACP revolvers.Have a 625-3(4") and 25-2(6 1/2") Enjoy it. one of the nicest
guns Smith ever made.

Congratulations on a neat find. They are not seen every day anywhere near here. I believe you will greatly enjoy it.

When I bought mine ANIB used in ~2006, .45 ACP was still inexpensive, so I shot it quite a bit. Found it really likes 200 gr Speer Lawman TMJ with flatpoint, which became plinking ammo, with 200 gr JHP in reserve.

Mine also Prod Code 100934, black sights, MIM trigger and prob hammer, born with rubber - now S&W RB Morado grips w/medallion as on 90s' 629DX. CET8XXX.

I hope you will also find yours a splendid shooter.

Best,

Dyson

Great score indeed, and as others have already stated...YOU STOLE THAT PUPPY!

I'm also with K22fan, I've been trying (with no success) to find the total number of 625 Mountain Gun's in .45ACP produced.

Odd, they can tell us how many Triple Locks were made, how many Target Model of 1950's were made. But can't come up with a number for 625-? ACP Mountain Guns. Is this driving anyone else nuts?

Congratulations on a very good buy. I looked for that exact gun for about a year, then decided I wanted the gun S&W never built, a blued 45 ACP Mountain Gun. Found a M25-2 on which someone installed a 1950 tapered barrel. Sent it to my revolver smith and he cut it to 4", rounded the butt like the other MGs and then bead blasted and blued the whole thing.

Came out just as I hoped it would. One of my favorites now but if I'd have seen your deal I would have been tempted by that one too. (smile)
