can anybody tell me a little about my 38 spl. 5 screw serial # s 882999 on grip and also stamped on inside of cylider.4 inchbarrelwith a differant type of & of the smith and wesson that i have ever seen.thanks in advance

You have a post WW II S&W. The serial number range S11120 to S999999 was produced from 1945 to 1948.

And the "s" indicates you have a hammer block safety so with the hammer down on a loaded chamber the gun will not fire even if it is dropped on the hammer or the hammer is hit hard accidentally.
