New to S&W, just bought a 686 6" Stainless

After going through a few S&W .357's, I finally lucked out on a 686 No Dash 6" made in 1984. I really like the long underlug barrel for taming recoil. I substituted Patrick Grashorn's (Excecutioner's) American Elk handles on mine:

SS686, congratulations on scoring one nice gun, I bought my 686 no dash back in 1986, and it was my first Smith, great shooting gun and I have had tons of enjoyment from shooting it, I more recently got it back from selling it 9 years ago to a friend who really never shot it. I feel very fortunate to say the least. I'm a lousy photographer but here it is, Welcome to the forum, Pigman

You're in luck! Hornady just renewed their 1000 free bullets promotion for 2009. That means, if you get a loader, and a die set, that's 1100 free bullets!, and that effectively reduced the cost of your press and dies tremendously!
That's what I did, and I sold the .45 xtp hp's for 200 bucks. I'll the load the 100 bullets for 9mm myself, it's still a heckofa bargain.

Everyone should quit with all the lies about reloading!!! I have never saved any money reloading, but I sure do get to shoot a LOT MORE!!

Congratulations again. I did not find that the Pachmayr grips that came on my 686-6 from June 2007 (did get it used) fit my smaller hands, so tried a Hogue mono grip then the Bantam wooden model which fits me quite well. Just to let you know there are other ooptions as you learn what works best for you. As you can see there are many different styles shown above and seem to have been several changes in what came from the factory with the different dash numbers.

Hello everyone. This is my first Smith and I just got it today. I tried to research what I wanted in a wheel gun and came up with the 686. I understand the internal lock and the debates, but what's the deal with older guns and people saying "no dash". I take it this refers to the actual dash on model numbers, but I don't know what this all means as far as differences in pistols. Also, if there are any things to look out for or anything you'd like to add about this gun, I would appreciate it. I just plan on target shooting with it since I already have a small .40 I use for personal defense. Thanks!

Any pics yet?

Sorry everyone, been working and shooting too much! No pics yet, but I just gave the gun a basic cleaning after a day at the range the other day, so I'll grab the camera and at least get some basic pics tonight. This is a great revolver! You guys are right, I want the 617 and several others now! I appreciate all the info and help you guys have given on this thread!

Enjoy your new gun, Curtis. You will like it. Don't forget the N-frame models...they are great as well.

Okay, let's see if I did this right. This is my 6" 686-6. I also put in my Ruger Mark III. I was originally going to shoot my 22 for a pistol club I'm joining tomorrow, but since I got the Smith, I'm going to use it instead. The reason? I love shooting it. The ruger is great, but there's something different about the smith I like. Maybe because it's a revolver, maybe it's the bigger bullets, maybe it's just cooler, who knows? Anyhow, here are the pics...I think....please forgive me is they are huge or not super great quality. I just shot them

on my iphone so they aren't the best.
