Hello so new guy here :) recently purchased a 39-2 that I am very happy with so far but yet to fire so may be happier after that :D So I found this at the local big box sports store . They had it marked at $215 which I thought was a great deal but I had a trade as well so I walked out with it for $100 and change ! So here I am to find out what I can as this is my first S&W in my collection.

Welcome ...... a 39-2 is a good place to start with Smith Autos...

The first generation 9mm Auto was introduced in 1955 and became the " Model 39" in 1957........ the -2 guns got a better extractor and are the best of the first generation guns in many's opinion.

if that serial # is A442xxx..........looks like a 1977-78...-2s were produced from 1971-83.. and would have shipped with wood grips......

not sure if that gun is factory nickel or not.........

A nickeled 39-2. The blued hammer, safety, trigger, slide lock and extractor are correct. The magazine will be blued also.

Very nice, and a great price for sure. I recently picked up my first two 39's.

Now that you got the S&W bug it will multiply soon. :D And a warm

Thanks for the info guys its good to know a year it was made. The mags are blued the aftermarket is a pro mag I don't really like the fact the floorplate sticks out past the bottom of the grip I might have to take that part of the mag to the grinder to even it out until I can afford to get some more factory mags.

Your 39-2 is the pistol that spawned -ALL- of the others, and ALL of the others are fantastic pistols. Be warned, however, that almost none of the regular full production pistols have the same sweetheart trigger that the 39-2 has. So you are starting with one of the best single action trigger break & reset of any in the line.

Factory mags (as were original to the 39 and 39-2) are pretty rare. Used ones are out there, but I don't think that anyone makes them to the original spec's any more. I just ordered 4 of these...
Smith & Wesson Mag S&W 39 439 539 639 909 952 3904 3906 3944 3946 9mm

...knowing that they are longer (9 rds instead of 8). I am hopeful that they work out for me.

If you can't find used, original mags, try these!

"Like stink on poop", is how I'd have been all over that deal.
