First off loved the site when I ran across it earlier today, so I signed up.

A bit of background how I ended up here. On Friday I received some of the best news in my lifetime, LEO had recovered my 15-4 that had been stolen in 1991!!!!!!! Praying to the wheel gun Gods that it was more than just a "hammer" I picked it up today. She sure was rough looking, probably had not been cleaned since it was stolen and had surface rust here and there and a bit more bluing missing from what I remember. When I last saw it there was bluing missing at the muzzle end from years of going in and out of the leather holster during Action Pistol matches.

I tore her down and ran a dry patch through the barrel to see what "colors" showed up on the patch. WOOHOO just crud and no rust colors!! Even before I left the Police evidence lockup I bore lighted it and could clearly see all the lands!

After about 2 hours and removing crud from places I had never had to remove crud before she looks serviceable not pretty but serviceable. Sure could use a re-bluing!! Amazingly the trigger pull is still pretty smooth and the hammer falls at about the same point as I remember it doing. Firing pin fully seats into a fired case. While I do not know what the gap should be between the cylinder and barrel (going to search for that after posting). The gap if close and even and there is very little cylinder movement when empty and closed.

While she is much heavier than my Taurus Ultra Light I am so happy to have this as my carry gun again!! I shot her in Action Pistol quite a bit and we took quite a few 1st and 2nd places. So to carry her again is very comfortable feeling.

Question I am trying to refresh my brain is her "dates" be it manufacture or when she went out the door at the factory. Original box and receipt were damaged beyond use decades ago. As previously mentioned she is a 15-4 serial number 84K27XX.

I had bought a 19-4 as a replacement and was forced to sell her so having my 15-4 is just so sweet!

Thanks in advance for any date information. Best the old brain cells remember I bought her in the mid 80's while still in the Air Force.

Great ending! Good to have an old friend back again

BTW, the serial number dates from 1980 according to the SCSW 3rd.

Bill

Thanks Bill. I read earlier about the books are when they left the factory and not the manufacture date, correct?

Good for you!

Welcome to the forum!

Be careful though, they reproduce ;), soon it will have 'babies' and you'll be on your way!

Your information is not correct.

Frames are manufactured in serial number order, that is why we can look at a chart and guess an approximate date.

However firearms were not assembled nor did they leave the factory in serial number order. It is the date that they shipped that is on the early S&W records (pre-computers). To know the shipping date requires that the S&W Historian research your revolver, mostly in old paper records. You would have to order a historical letter for this information.

Thanks for sharing your great day. Glad you got your gun back and that it's in OK shape. Go out and enjoy shooting it - and show us pictures and a range report. Jerry

Well, IF I could get that 19-4 back that would be that. But especially since I have been out of work since 2006 (back injury), no money for that old hobby.

OK I had it backwards, thanks for the clarification. IF the brain cells remember correctly I bought it 84-85 and was curious as to how much "older" it may be.

Hopefully I can get some range time in the next month or so to run a few rounds through her for a true (beyond snap caps) functional check. After that she'll just get carried a lot. Can no longer shoot as I use to. God only knows what it would cost 20+ years later to reload 200 rounds a month.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and the information!
