Picked up a Performance Center .460 7.5” revolver tonight. I wasn’t really looking for a 7.5” barrel, but the price and the unfluted cylinder got me - I’m a sucker for anything with an unfluted cylinder, and I bought this thing for a decent price.

Gun had exactly 8 rounds put through it by the prior owner. I recently traded a 329pd for a .500 magnum 6.5”. I loved the .500, but my younger brother loved it more, so I let him keep it.

I’m excited to play with the .460 - this one came with 92 rounds of ammo and looks almost factory new.

I think I am turning this gun into my new hog / whitetail hunter. Love the idea of the versatility of .460 / .454 / .45 long colt, etc. I am going to try the stock fiber optic sight this weekend, but I know that I may want to try an optic since the gun has the integral rail. Any recommendations / experiences (good or bad) with optics on these x-frames? I’d probably lean toward a red dot of some type, but may consider a fixed lower power scope.

Welcome to the Forum
and Congratulations on the new addition

I would not go with a fixed power scope or red dot.

That revolver has enormous versatility in what it can launch out the muzzle, your optic should have similar versatility

I am Very fond of the 1.5-5x Leupold scopes on the high powered revolvers. I have one on my 357 SuperMag Dan Wesson

On the single shots, I usually go for the 2-7x or higher in handgun calibers.

Congratulation on your 460 acquisition.

Buy once-cry once- get a Leupold 2.5x8 and be done, even these have about a 6000 round limit.
They warranty their products without question and turn around has been good to date.

All other scopes I tested lasted less than 100 rounds and many less than 20. To be fair the Bushnell lasted about 400 but drift started at just under 200 rounds.

3 or 4 rings suggested to prevent scope creep, Mid range height works best in my opinion.

I have not had good results with red dots on x-frames. The best results to date have been with AimPoint.

If you don't handload you should start. the true potential of the cartridge is unlocked when you start.

While the 200FTX factory ammo will kill deer it is poor choice as a big game bullet- it fragments to easy and damages meat. Personally I find the monolith bullets best for hunting all though jacketed bullets like the XTP Mags and Swift A-frames work reasonably well.

Again hope you find the same enjoyment I have shooting and hunting with the 460.

be safe

I would take ruggyh's comments to heart. If you want an optic to survive even reasonably powerful rounds it must be top notch.

To make you laugh, I bought a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot a while back. 4 rounds of medium heavy ammo out of my 500 destroyed it. Red dot looked like a bug eyed fish, front lens 40 degrees off of normal.

Bushnell told me they tested it with 3.5" 12 ga mag shotshells. Obviously the shotguns recoil characteristics are much different than the 500 Mag.

I'm back to irons. Don

Congratulations!

The suggestions for the Leupold scope are top notch, Leupold makes high quality optics.

Vortex also has some top notch optics and a lifetime warranty. I can't give you insight on how they fare with the behemoths. My friends with model 500's and 460's are using iron sights.

Enjoy the 460!

Thank all. I appreciate all of the info above. I will decide whether I want to try an optic after the range trip tomorrow.

My next task will be finding a chest rig that can accommodate this barrel profile (I really dislike the nylon rigs - I’d rather go leather if I can find one).

Although I don't own one I really like the versatility of that caliber. We have them come into our range and I always enjoy shooting them when a customer gives me the opportunity.
Save all your brass.

Plenty of letter chest rigs for this gun. Any thing that works with the 8.375" barrel gun will work for your- they are the same overall length.

I have both a Galco and a Mernickle chest rig for that barrel length and a preference for the Mernickle.

Dropped my 69 8-3/8" and my 625-2 5" off with my gunsmith friend today, he drilled and tapped them both to factory specification installed a Weigand 4-1/2" (WWIG-A-TINNY) weaver style base for my Holosun HE507C green dot/circle sight. I went with this type and size base because I may want to swop out the dot/circle later for a handgun scope. I haven't purchased a sight or base for the 625 yet but if I go with the Weigand, they have the same base only shorter in length. I also looking at the Raptor which will lie much lower on the revolver putting the bottom of the sight just slightly above the top strap. Both bases will fit the factory spec. mounting holes. I believe the Raptor costs slightly more than the Weigand but not so much to deter me from getting one. I'm going to check all the specs. and then decide which one I think will work out best for me.
