New used revolver day: 637

I've gotten **** by some for the rubber bands. People are all like WHY????? And I'm like cuz they make the grips just a bit fatter and that works for me. Helps me keep my right thumb out of the way of the trigger finger. Probably helps cushion recoil a little and the extra girth probably helps a bit of control during recoil. And they cost like nothing. Sitting in my drawer from a bag I bought years and years ago.

Although admittedly I like the hogue grips better on my 442 and have been thinking about getting set for this gun too.

BUT:

A nice gentlemen from here (I think his screen name is GeoJelly) sent me these grips for free. I just paid shipping. They seem really nice. But I'm trying to decide if the stickiness is normal for Uncle Mikes or years of gunk on them. I have cleaned them with a toothbrush and vinegar and water and a couple wipe downs of sanitizing wipes. I think I need to try some warm water and soap with the toothbrush.

If anyone else has UM's, are they kind of sticky feeling?

That was super duper duper nice of him though!!!! I do like the size of them a lot and I think they'd be good for carrying the gun. Once I clean them up all the way.

I think they have started to dry out and feel a lot better now. I also really really like the feel of these on the draw. They are very easy to be consistent with. And the sights seem to line up real good for me.

I hope I shoot well with them on and feel like I have good control. They're a little harder than hogues and the factory rubber so I'm wondering if they'll be slippery or not. They leave more room for my left hand to get more grip on though.

More often than not, once the old rubber grips get sticky they stay sticky. I've never been able to find any way to get rid of it.

Those UM three finger combat grips are some of the best for a J frame!

Personally, I like the Pachmayr Compacs (printing is over-rated) they feel great and aid in accurate shooting. I'm down to 2 J frames right now (642 & 638) and keep one with UM Boots grips and one with Compacs. With Cargo shorts the Compacs conceal quite well. I do have Altamont Boots and Combats and while they look good I prefer rubber for shooting.

I think the cleaning paid off. The UM's don't really feel that sticky any more. Yaaaaay. But they're not as soft as the factory boot grips, hogues or pachmyrs at this point so I hope I find them controllable under recoil. Because man I sure do like the way they feel and point and they draw really consistently thus far.

As far at the pachmyr compacs, what I like about them is they fill the hand up and give a really solid grip on the gun. I noticed the set I have is not wanting to close at the front completely and that is a bit annoying. I never noticed that before. Even when I torqued the screw down pretty tight.

So far the UM's seem to work with speedloaders just fine.
