Hi all, I just picked my 15-22 up Tuesday 5/18 and put around 250 rounds through it the same day... Needless to say I had 15 FTE's, 7 FTF's and on the last mag, a round exploded in the chamber. Then the next 2 shots the extractor pin blew out with the spring. Fun times. I was using Federal Champions.

I still love the rifle and S&W emailed me a shipping label 5 minutes after i called them. I plan on sending the rifle back on Monday.

I have a few questions though:

Did you guys send the rifle in the original box? I'm kinda worried about sending a box with S&W stamped all over it but I cant find a box big enough to ship it in.

Did fedex pick it up from your house? DO they give you any problems when you tell them it's a firearm?

On the very first FTE, the shell casing got jammed between the bolt and the window?? (part where shell flies out) cutting deep into the plastic... now it looks bad (like someone took a knife and hacked at it), do you think s&w will fix this or replace it with a new upper?

This site is very informative and i plan on sticking around!

Thanks in advance :D

Some forum members have wrapped the original S&W box in kraft paper before shipping it back. Others have turned the box inside out and shipped it that way.

WHY would you tell FedEx there was a gun in the box? Do you have a Kinko's nearby? FedEx owns Kinko's so you can drop it off there. These stores are being renamed FedEx Office.

What are JUST the the first 3 letters of your serial number?

I presume you have a 1st Generation mag, so include it in the box back to S&W. Write a note and include with the gun, indicating the damage to the upper receiver and request that it be replaced.

Good Luck

Sorry to hear about your luck... hope you get it back quick.. they sure are a lot of fun when they r right

Thanks for the response.

The shiping instructions I recieved from S&W tells me to notify fedex the package contains a firearm and it states not to use a fedex kinkos center lol. Should I not tell them it's a firearm?

My serial # starts with DTX

Thanks for the tips. I'll write a note about the damage.... hopefully they will replace that.

:) Hi Matt and welcome to the forum. I am a new 15/22 user but not new to the forum. I just got my 15/22 today and have not fired it yet. I hope I don't have the same luck you did. S&W will fix it up for you so don't worry. Don

1st, sorry to hear about that. 2nd, a big welcome to you, from the great lakes state of Michigan. And 3rd, like somebody said just before, go ahead and wrap up the outside of the box in some of that dark brown paper. Butcher shops, also will have some pretty tough white colored paper on rolls.

There is no requirement to tell anyone it's a firearm, I have no idea what S&W is talking about. You must tell a common carrier a package contains a firearm is it is NOT being sent to a FFL or manufacturer. No need in this case.

I discovered that this rifle breaks into two short sections so I wrapped each half in bubble wrap and sent it back in a short box with the label pasted on the outside. Since it went FedEx ground I dropped at the local FedEx terminal. (I drive within 1/2 mile of it, so that was convenient.)

Came back in a retail box inside a sleeve. Took about 10 days and was delivered on Christmas Eve. FedEx driver was surprised to get an "adult signature required" package. And even more surprised when I told him it was a rifle.

Follow S&W's instructions about NOT using Kinko's. I still would NOT tell FedEx it's a gun. I've searched again and can find NO law or regulation that requires such an Obama dictate.

If possible, if you own a digital camera that can take macro (close-up) images IN FOCUS, document all the damage BEFORE you ship it.

same thing

had to send mine back also just used the box it came in
with S&W all over it took it to fed ex office in a staples store
you do need to tell them its a firearm though , now im a
happy owner of a great toy.

Thanks guys,

I 'll just schedule a pick up and wrap the box up. I'll take some pics of the damage too.

Thanks again!

Sorry to hear about your bad luck. It sounds like your experience was just like mine except I was more stubborn and put about 1000 rounds downrange before sending mine back. I was having FTE's about 40% of the time. It was frustrating to say the least.

Rest assured, S&W will take good care of you. I was told the same thing you were as far as where to take it and what to say. I shipped mine in the factory box, right side out and had no problems. The lady at my local depot simply scanned the prepaid label on the box and put it to the side. The transaction would have been over at that point had I not asked for a tracking slip. Then, before turning to walk away, I remembered to tell her there was a firearm in the box. She couldn't have cared less. I would be surprised if you have any problems. The prepaid shipping label from S&W makes all the difference in the world.

Be sure to update us when you get it back in a couple weeks. Mine has been 100% flawless in approx. 1000 rounds since I have gotten it back. and thats shooting all kinds of ammo.

Are any of the Mods here tracking the serial number series of those that are being returned to S&W for repair, and the reason for each return ???

Sounds like a good topic for a new thread.

"If you have returned your S&W M&P 15-22 to S&W for repair, what was the reason and what was your serial number series, I.E. DTX####"
