I just picked up a new model 57 classic blued. I have wanted one of these since they first came out. I am referring to the original model 57.
My question to the group is, can I fire 41 special loads in this new model 57?
I have brass coming from Starline and Redding dies for the 41mag
I am 76 and have not reloaded since I stopped shooting metallic silhouette in the 90's. At the time I was loading both 308
and 44mag. I am now very happy to get back in the shooting sports.

You can download the 41 Magnum to pretty much any level that you want

There is no need to use shorter wildcat brass

The 57/357/657 Family of Revolvers are among my favorites

.41 Special cases will be just like using .38 Spl cases in a .357 Mag. Except that brass doesn't "litter the countryside", like .38 Spl.!

Sounds like a good plan. Handloading's a good time consumer.

The 41 Special case will work fine though published reloading data for them won't be as plentiful.

Just remember to clean the chambers good before you fire the longer 41 Mag cases in them.

The only downside to 41 special brass is the 41 magnum dies may not be able to seat and crimp the bullet. The brass cases are shorter than 41 magnum .
My 38 special dies will reload 357 magnum but 357 magnum dies will not reload 38 special.
I was going to order 41 Special brass untill I thought about my dies, now I just load cast bullets to 750 to 850 fps in the longer cases.
To answer your question , yes 41 special can be fired in the model 57. Nice gun , don't sell it.
Mine's a model 58.

Congratulations on acquiring a fine revolver! I found one about 6 months ago in 4" and love the thing and I'm a huge fan of the .44 (special and magnum) so I never thought I'd actually own a .41 mag. I originally trimmed my .41 mag brass down to .41 special specs but finally ordered some Starline .41 specials. I've had a ball loading the .41 special. John Taffin has had several articles as of late that include 41 special load data and I've seen others. Another source is loaddata.com. Re: the crimp die, I use my Speer .41 mag dies for sizing and flaring but, as mentioned, the crimp die from the .41 magnum won't work. I tried using a taper crimp from my 10mm/40 S&W dies but was not happy with the accuracy. I took a chance on the Lee .41 magnum crimper, thinking I was going to have to grind some off of the bottom of the die in order to make it work. I didn't want to grind my RCBS .41 magnum crimper. The Lee crimper cost around $15. When I got it I tried it with the .41 Special loads and found I don't have to grind anything off the die - works just fine for the .41 special.

Thanks Bohonkie , good to know the Lee 41 magnum seat/crimp die will work with 41 Special brass. Those don't cost a lot and like you I didn't want to alter my existing dies .
Another reason I was going to use 41 special brass was ejecting the empties , specials clear the chambers easier than magnums and this makes for easier reloading.

Congratulations! As others have noted, you can always download the magnum-length cases. I think it would work especially well with Unique, as it isn't as position sensitive as some other powders and takes up a lot of room in the case anyway.

Another good reason to use properly head-stamped 41 special brass is, at least with me, you won't be mixing up your magnum (longer) brass with the shorter specials. At least as much. I always miss a few and have crushed more than one magnum case while handloading. I've tried about 25 special loads thus far... Go out and have some fun!
