Hello Everyone - A new and very excited owner here! I am new to the rifle/pistol scene as I have been a clay shooter only until now. I decided now that there is a new baby in the house I needed something fun (M&P 15-22) and something for defense (M&P 9mm) both I just bought a few days ago. I bought the M&P 15-22 used and it came with the following goodies; UTG tactical light/laser combo, Aim 4X32 Scope with Fiber Optic Sight, Bipod/Grip, and 4 24rd magazines. So far I have removed the tactical light/laser and am planning on removing the scope pending some opinions on here. I plan to use the 15-22 for some 50-100 yard plinking outdoors and also target shooting for fun at a local indoor range here as well. I have researched and read numerous threads on here and am kind of at a loss where to start. I haven't read anything about the AIM 4x32 but have seen good opinions on the Bushnell TRS-25, Primary Arms Micro Dot, or for longer range a Nikon P223. I found a refurbished EOTech for a reasonable price but not sure if that is overkill or not. I am looking for some help as a newbie who really doesn't know where to start to be able to have some fun plinking but shoot targets as well. Any ideas for me??

I have and use both Optics - TRS-25 and P223. I have the TRS on my 15-22 and P223 on my MP15. My boys (9, 11, 14) shoot the 15-22 and love the red dot. They shoot into a river and at paper/steel targets at 20-50 yards. They love it and I love it too. It's good for quick/fast target acquisition. I have no complaints on either and really depends on what you'll be doing with it. I looked into higher end optics and really couldn't justify the $ for what we do. We are hobby shooters that visit the range 1/month or so... Sometimes less. Hope this helps.

I also have the MOE version which doesn't have the A2 front sight. Rather it has the flip up Magpul sight. With the UTG .83 riser, it is co-witness with the TRS-25.

Thanks for the quick reply, I appreciate the info. Honestly my situation sounds just like you & your boys - hobby shooting while on my property and going to the range (25yds) here and there which is why my immediate thought is to take off the 4x32 scope since I dont think I will be doing a ton of long range shooting. Would it be best to get some flip-up sights?

With the co-witness setup, it allows me to train them to shoot with flip up sights. I've been pretty happy with the setup. I spent $ on accessories like the flashlight, and button, etc... Probably could've saved that $ for ammo. I thought I would have a light for a purpose but haven't figured out that purpose yet. Maybe I can purpose it for self defense. One day maybe.

and 4 24rd magazines.

For reference, those are 25 round magazines. If you are only getting 24 rounds in them, that tells me you probably aren't staggering the rounds properly. Also, if not staggered, you will increase the number of failures.

I suggest you take some time & read the past threads here. Someone is always asking for optics help, so there are tons of threads. And don't worry about an Eotec being overkill. That is your decision & your decision only. I have two 15-22s and one has an Eotec & the other has an Aimpoint Pro. I have used the TRS-25 in the past, still have 2 of them, and they are great for a 22. I personally don't like magnified optics on my 22s, as I normally shoot under 50 yards. When I do need magnification, I have magnifiers that sit in front of the optic, on flip to the side mounts. I generally only add those to the gun when sighting in a new optic or when I need extreme accuracy... which is very seldom for me. I remove them for normal shooting, to keep the gun lighter.

Oops - the 24rd was a typo, they are 25rd magazines for sure.

I have been reading more on optics and see a lot of Bushnell TRS-25 and Primary Arms RDS reviews and recommendations. I saw one other option on the site that looked pretty cool as well TruGlo Open Red-Dot Sight Red/Green Illuminated Multi-Reticle Matte Black TG8360B FREE S&H TRUTG8360B. TruGlo Red Dot Sights. but not sure how that stacks up against the TRS-25 or Primary Arms RDS. The EOTech would be a sweet option if I can work a deal from this specific seller but if not it's out of my price range I think.

The sighting system is the most important part of the rifle. If you can't see it you can't shoot it. Also the better you see the target the more accurate you will be. Oh, one more thing I have learned here, buy cheap-pay twice. Yes it is true. I bought other red dots before but I settled on the EoTech. I could have saved money if I just bought the EoTech first but like most thought is was too much money.

My 15-22 is a range toy, and has a TruGlo TruBrite red-dot sight on top. Others like the Bushnell TRS-25, or the Primary Arms options... all are acceptable. I actually really like the offerings from Primary Arms; I use one of their MD-AD micro dot sights on top of my 300BLK SBR.

Thank you all for the input. After reading countless reviews and comparisons I am going to order the folding sights and TRS-25 to start out with on my new toy. Will post some thoughts once I get a chance to shoot with the setup.

Sounds like you're already set and you haven't made a bad choice. The TRS-25 is very popular for a reason. I found that I prefer a magnified optic for work out around the 100 yard range. It's not necessary but it's what I like. I think you'll be happy with your choice. At the end of the day, the 15-22 has zero recoil and there for does well with optics of lesser quality than EOTech. Overkill? In my book, yes, but then again I don't fault anyone for buying good quality stuff.

You can find a myriad of risers from many different retailers, from Midway, to Primary Arms, to Amazon. I recently purchased a 45 degree rail from Amazon based on the reviews and am completely impressed. Take a look around. There are many options, including QD mounts.

Happy Christmas to meeee, Happy Christmas to meeee,

I run an AimPoint PRO on my 15-22; it's the same one that I run on all my AR type rifles. It works just fine for the accuracy I'm looking for.

Question..

I am about to purchase the MOE 15-22 (811034) and have decided on the TRS 25. Does it mount directly onto the rail or do I need to get a hi rise mount? What are the options?

Thanks

You can mount it directly to the rifle as is, however it will be very low and likely uncomfortable for you to shoot. This is why everyone buys some type of riser. You will have to decide if you want to co-witness with your irons and how; i.e. do you want lower 1/3 or absolute co-witness. That choice will dictate the size of riser you will need. If you don't know what I'm talking about, search this site a little bit. This topic has been covered at length and there's some very good information to learn and read regarding optics and options.
