Hi guys, this will be my first gun purchase. I dont know what version to get! I think I have it down between 811030 , 811033, 811034, and just today I see a 150781 for the first time. I am not gun savvy and can not really tell the difference between these rifles. Which do I get? Also where is the cheapest place online to order one of these? I do not qualify for budspolicesupply, so that is out the window. If you do not have any website recommendations, what are some good target prices I should shoot for?

Thanks,
David

get the MOE version, i think its your third model number. you wont regret it. you get the MOE stock and the magpul MBUS irons. I use mine competitively.

I did not do my homework and paid too much for the 811033. Purchased from a local gun store. I paid $559 before taxes. As far as I can tell I paid more than anyone on this site. Check Walmart.

I know I want a scope on it, will I need to get one with the folding down sight? Also whats the difference between the MOE (811034) and the The Smith & Wesson 150781 M&P-15-22 TALO Special Edition Rifle?

what are you going to use it for? thats probably the most important question. you at least want a threaded barrel in case you want to add on stuff later. MOE version comes with upgraded magul sights, stock and grip if you think you want those. low end models are in the low 400s, MOE high 400s.

Since this is your first gun ,let start basic. Get the cheapest one and shoot it with just iron sights first. Get the feel for it then add a scope and accessories.

Extra mags and ammo first on the list.

The MOE seems to be to hard to find. What is the difference (in laymen terms) between the MOE (811034) and the The Smith & Wesson 150781 M&P-15-22 TALO Special Edition Rifle?

I don't see the TALO edition, nor the # 150781 on S&W's web site. Perhaps it's a resellers special edition (those are oftentimes done).

The main thing, to me, with the MOE is that it comes with about $80 worth of Magpul folding sights already installed. I refused to buy anything else, and waited a month to get one. I knew I'd want to get at least a telescopic sight in addition, and wanted to be sure I didn't have to remove the sights, or mount the scope WAAY too high, to add one. Since then, I've gotten both a good scope and red dot, but the original Magpul sights are still there, because they fold down.

The MOE also gives you a Magpul stock and grip, which are slightly nicer, IMHO. But the sights is why I bought this one.

(Note that the sights are, to me, a bit funny in that the rear adjusts only for windage, and the front only for elevation, but that's certainly not a problem.)

That sounds like exactly what I want. I dont want to remove the sights or have a silly looking high scope. Here is the info from the 150781 Talo edition

The Smith & Wesson 150781 M&P-15-22 TALO Special Edition Rifle in .22 LR features a 16.5-inch threaded barrel, matte black finish, lightweight polymer upper and lower receivers, 6 position collapsible stock, front and rear Magpul MBUS, flash hider, A3 style flat top upper receiver, quad rail handguard, functioning charging handle, and a 25 round capacity.

So is that Magpul MBUS on the 150781 the same as the MOE version? Is the 150781 TALO edition the same as the MOE, but without magpul stock and grip?

From the brief research I've done, it looks like the Talo edition was put out by Davidsons, and was the first version with Magpul MBUS sights (before the MOE came out). Comments here seem to indicate that it was the same as standard gun, except with the sights, and that people wished they'd waited for the MOE, which has the Magpul stock and grip. Plus, this was over 2 years ago, so this gun /may/ have been sitting around (or shooting?) for a while.

Anyhow, to me, looks like the MOE is a better way to go.

I would go MOE as well. I bought the plain one and wish I would have waited, got the money and bought the MOE one. (for the reasons stated above, cheaper than adding them after)

honestly MBUS are overrated to me. my 15-22 is a range gun. my scope has an etched reticle and although it is illuminated, if the battery dies then i can still shoot. however i do carry 2 spare batteries in my case so if my red dot dies then i just replace them or on the scope. batteries are cheap so i dont worry about it. now if you are competing or hunting with your gun then i can see why having a set of MBUS would be useful. im not knocking anyone that has them, just saying that as a new owner they arent as necessary as everyone makes them out to be. my stock sights sit in a ziplock bag with my other spare parts.

i did add a magpul miad grip because i needed a larger grip and the MOE was too thin. i also added a magpul PTS CTR stock namely for looks. the friction lock does not do much on the PTS it seems so the MOE would have sufficed but the price difference isnt big enough to matter now.

basically think about what you want your gun to end up being before spending the extra $ on the MOE version. it may make sense, it may not.

The MOE also has an rear QD sling mount built into/integral to the receiver that is not on other models.

I have an MOE and the difference in price I was able to get it for was well worth it given the extras (MOE stock, MOE grip, MBUS, and the integrated QD mount).

The stock/MBUS/grip can all be easily swapped over to a standard AR.
