Just joined this great forum. Bought a 66-6 w/2 1/2 in barrel in 2004 because salesman said it was a good home defense gun. Had no clue what I was buying other than the S&W name. It's not my CC piece but it is my favorite range gun by far. My question is "what have I got?", should I be leary of the "lock" as it is my primary home defense gun? My wife has a 60-7 and loves it.

Hello Ohniner. A model 66 in 4 inch trim was my first handgun purchase back in 1982. What you have there is a great revolver, in my opinion, in a barrel length I covet. Hang on to it sir. As far as the lock goes, I am fortunate enough to have no experience, good or bad.:D

Much as the IL is hated and reviled and claimed to cause countless malfunctions, typically in life-and-death situations, I've put several thousand rounds through a 4" 66-7, not to mention many thousands more in various other IL Smiths, many in rapid-fire IDPA matches and practice sessions, with nary a glitch. I'm sure that a 66-6 is a fine handgun.

Thanks

I know its a great gun to shoot, now I know the S&W community thinks so also. Thanks for your replies.

Welcome to the forum. You have a great k frame that is very popular with S&w ahooters. I have a pre-lock model of the 66 with 2 1/2 inch barrel and it is great for cc and having in the night stand for home defense.

I also have a few newer model S&W with the lock and have never had an issue. Happy shooting.
