Hello all, longtime lurker, first time poster. Looking for some help/info on a model 1006 I got from an estate sale. Advertised as NIB and certainly appears to be. I was hoping someone could date it for me serial #TFJ0xxx. Came in the period correct blue cardboard box, no paperwork or cleaning kit however. The box label is what really concerns me. It has the matching serial #. Shows Model No. 1006, Caliber 10mm, Barrel 5, Fin. S, Stock Features USED GUN 03, Product Code 608279, Serial No. TFJ0xxx, Spec. Ord., USED with a blue checkmark. I wasn't aware Smith sold used guns. Could I have a NIB pistol, a definately used one or something entirely different? Factory refurbished? Police/FBI trade in?/ or perhaps a factory test piece? Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bob.

1006

Not sure what to make of the notation on the box, however if the gun appears NIB and you paid a fair price you should be very happy with it. I have a 1006 and it is an awesome example of third gen Smiths. Welcome to the Big 10 fan club!

Thanks for the replies. I probably paid too much, but I've been looking for a while, not too many for sale in my area. The pistol did include a total of six mags which added a little to the deal. I have a camera but must confess to not being too adept at this whole internet thing. I'm posting from work as my laptop seems terminal. Anyone have any imput regarding manufacture date? Thanks Bob.

Smith & Wesson 10mm pistols
1006 - 26,979 units produced 1990-93

S&W 1006- 5.00" barrel, slide mounted safety/decocker traditional double action
S&W 1066- 4.25" barrel, slide mounted safety/decocker traditional double action
The hammer on the 1006 has the full tang, the 1066 is bobbed.
The 1006 and 1066 do have the slide mounted decocker/safety on both sides of the slide. Safety/Decocker if placed in safe mode allows the hammer to be dropped safely to the blocking bar so it can not hit the firing pin. With the Safety/Decocker in fire mode, pulling the trigger will cock and fire the pistol. The pistol can be carried with the Safety/Decocker in the fire position with the hammer un-cocked and the trigger will cock the hammer and fire the pistol Double Action. After the gun is fired, it is fully recocked and the gun is fired single action till empty or decocked. You can carry the pistol cocked with the Safety/Decocker in fire position, then the "ONLY SAFETY IS THE TRIGGER" Single Action! Some models can be fired without the magazine present if the magazine disconnect is removed.

The 1006 is an awsome handgun. I had one and loved it, but the ammo was pricy and I am getting retired soon, so it had to go. Went to a good home though.
