Hi All,

I have just bought a Model 27-2. I have always loved them but this is my first.

I don't believe it to be anything special (apart from being a 27, the most beautiful "Smith" in my humble opinion!) but I was wondering if someone here could help me out with a "date of birth". It is a 27-2 s/n N117xxx . I am guessing early '70s but I'm not sure.

I am just getting back into shooting after about 20 years.

I have been collecting antique handguns for years but have decided I'd like to start shooting again. My last (shootable) S&W was my old 586 that I sold in 1990.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks

Mike

Welcome! Like you, I just bought my first 27-2 a week or so ago. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Great gun!

Welcome Mike.

Of course we'll help any way we can. Keep in touch!

Sorry to hear of the restrictions placed on your freedom. At least you can own, after the process.

Maybe my So. Florida is not such 'hell' afterall.

Regards ,,Allen Frame

Thanks for the quick replies!

I'd love to post some pics but I don't have it in my posession yet :(

In Australia it is a month long process to acquire new guns. I have paid for it and it is safe. Now I have to wait for my state police weapons licencing branch to issue me with a "permit to acquire". Here in Aus we have to prove a need for a gun. You have to be in an approved club, get a letter from the club advising the police that it is an appropriate handgun for club use (which can take a week!), pay $22 to get the application form, wait a minimum 28 days before the permit is issued. Only then can I go and pick the 27 up :(

When I do I'll certainly post some pics

Mike

I do have the pics from the dealer. As I said, its nothing special but it is a model 27...my fave. Oh yeah and its still in its original box.

That looks like a nice Mod 27-2. I don't have a 27 (yet) but have a couple of 28's and they shoot great. It sounds like gun sales are a pain over there, but that 27-2 is certainly worth all of the work. Welcome to the forum and have fun with your new revolver.

being a 27-2 is something special in itself. jumping through all those political hoops will make you appreciate it that much more in the end. happy i don't have to go through it.

Never have been able to verify it, but I have been told that the top strap checkering is hand done.

Beautiful pistol and you have every right to be proud.

Top strap checkering was done by knurling machine, which was operated by a trained worker, so I guess you could say it's "hand" checkered.

(I think I read that on this forum, but I'm not sure...)

Very nice looking 27. I love them myself. Your waiting situation is kinda like sitting in a pizza joint smelling the cooking pies before yours is brought out. Anticipation to the max! But 28 days worth is a tough one!

Be sure and come back and tell us about you're first shooting experience.

Hahaha yeah, it is. The only problem that is at the moment there is a backlog and 28 days can turn into 6 weeks!...ahhh well

I will certainly let you all know how it shoots when I finally get it

Cheers

Well, the weapons licensing branch has done it's self proud!! My permit came through in just 15 days. It will still be the weekend before I have time to go and pick my old 27 up but at least now its all official :)

Ill post some pics when I get it home

Mike

Great Gun! Like some others commented, it has only been two weeks since I bought my first 27-2. I was so proud (like you will be) to get my hands on it. Mine is on the other end of the spectrum from yours, mine has a 3 1/2 inch barrel, and magna grips! I only paid $430 USD for mine! Yes sometimes you can win on gunbroker! How can you argue with a revolver as nice as the 27?

Thanks for that.

Mine was a bit of a bargain too at $495 Australian dollars, with its original box. Thats about $450 US at the current exchange rates.

Congrats on owning a real piece of highest quality, handgun history!
Also, congrats on taking the time and spending the money to jump through all the hoops! It's my opinion that hoops were made to jump through, so why not do it if you have to! Far more honorable than being one of those who "lay down and whine" because it is too much trouble!
Enjoy your 27-2, she will treat you well, i'm sure!!!

Well I finally picked her up today :)

This old gun feels great, shoots great and is balanced perfectly, in my humble opinion!

I went straight from the dealer to the range. It shot 82/100 at 20 metres single action on the first target....very pleased!!

The gun has had a bit of a life but has been kept in great condition seeing as it is 38 years old. Still has its original box. It has some holster wear and the blue is thining on the barrel but it was always going to be a shooter, not kept under glass :)

I used to shoot L frames 20 years ago but I don't think I could ever go back now I have "N" fever :D

Anyway here are a couple of better pics:
