Hello,
I am a new member but was referred to you guys as being the best for finding out more about S&W's. Please view the attached pictures and tell me what you can about this revolver. It was passed down to my cousin and still has yet to be fired. As you can see, it contains all of the original paperwork, wax paper, 12 half moon clips, box, and accessories as it did the day my uncle bought it. We would like to know when it was manufactured and what it is currently valued at. I have seen similar models for sale but not in the condition as this or with all of the accessories.

Inside, it states the following information.

Serial # N614XXX

Mod. 25-2

Thank you,

John

I have one much like that, except without the presentation case.

It is the most accurate handgun I own.

IIRC the model 1955 25-2 was built in the 1980s. I remember wanting one in the early '80s, but had just blown my gun-buying budget on a Colt Series 70 Government Model.

While I have pretty big hands for a woman, I did have to replace those ginormous target grips with something smaller. My shooting buddies could hardly believe the factory grips were bigger than the Pachmayer Presentation grips I have on it.

Superb gun.

I would guess your 25-2 was shipped in late 1978. What is the barrel length measured from the face of cylinder to the end of the barrel?

I don't follow this model so another member will have to estimate its value.

I think Doc44 asks because the 25-2s traditionally came with 6.5" barrels but in 1978 S&W standardized all models at 6". My 25-2 dates from 1980 guessing by the serial and it still has the 6.5" tube so I assume they had a lot of old barrels in inventory to use up.

Would be an interesting questions... when do 6" 25-2s appear, if at all?

Great pictures and fine gun for your cousin to inherit. As far as value, whatever the market will bear. The fact that it is unfired with the presentation box and all the original papers and tools always makes it worth more to most people.

They are great revolvers and are very accurate. I use hard cast bullets in auto rim brass. My throats are on the large side but it shoots very accurate. In NIB condition yours is a valuable gun. I don't keep up with the prices on this condition but it would take a lot to get it away from me if I owned it. Here is my six inch version and I would not sell it.
