A co-worker's grandad passed away and his heirs are having an estate sale (Will was sell everything and distribute the money to those named in the will). One item in the sale is a NIB Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman, 6 inch barrel, magna style grips with the tools, vapor paper and manual. My co-worker showed me pictures of everything on his cell phone. Serial number N2643XX. I'd really like to be able to give him a value on this piece as he is going to try and buy it at the auction.

I recently sold 2 S prefix 6" 28-2's on Gunbroker in similar condition w/ boxes & all contents for $ 800 each . Prices are somewhat regional so take that in account also . Agree with A10 in that $ 700 would be fair . Auctions can get crazy especially if 2 or more decide they gotta have it .

Estate Sale ..............

In rural Western Pa.............. A 6" Model 28...............IMO I think you're still under $650... even in that condition. A collector may pay more but an average buyer........ not so much.

In a "Burgh" shop $650-700; maybe listed at a tad more.

"Family & friends pricing" $500-550

Keep in mind that if he's getting a piece of the estate....... he can deduct that from his actual cost. Pays $650 and his share is 10 %..... his final cost is actually $585

For those venues ........I'd agree. Cost/values in W.Pa.; especially rural areas.... have IMO/observations always been lower than most other areas.

My co-worker is going to tap-out if the Model 28-2 goes above $675 due to PA tax and the $25 to $30 he will have to pay an FFL for the transfer.

Good advice from all who responded, and you made me feel good as, apparently I still have a decent idea of the W. PA market for S&W revolvers.

"$740 OTD" IMHO good call................... doesn't seem all that long ago you could get one (6") around her for half that.......

I would have a little higher tap out price than that, since he knows the history of the M28, it's been in the family, ... but that's me. Usually there are not a lot of knowledgeable gun buyers at that type of auction, unless there are A LOT of guns for sale, so he may get it for a couple hundred. He can hope anyway!

I wish your co-worker luck. It's a shame that he has to buy what really should be his own gun, though I can see how it would be easier writing a will in such a way. My dad's 96, and he gave my brother and I all of his guns before he moved to assisted living several years ago. We should all try to remember to do the same when we get to that point in our lives or write our wills accordingly.

Home version of "Family Feud".................. who gets what! Seen it happen .... more than once

Gun still in the box...... doesn't sound like a treasured family heirloom!

A week before April's show in Tulsa there were two available at a local show. No box or papers for either, but both were extremely clean. The 4" gun was $650 and the 6" was $550. Most of the comparable guns at Tulsa were $800+

If your "NIB" truly means "new-unfired-in-it's-original-factory-box-with-everything" and nothing less, it could easily be a $1K gun to the right buyer. That's what one went for up here in MA not that long ago and there were multiple interested buyers. I was late to the party so all I could do was look at it in the layaway case in all its unfired, pristine perfect glory. :o

But I understand Pennsylvania prices. :( $400 out the door. ;)

I really wanted my grandads two Savage Model 99's. One was a lightweight take-down model from the 1930's in .300 Savage, the other an early 1970's model with the detachable magazines (ugh!) in .308. My uncle sold all of his dad's guns the day after the funeral! :( He didn't hunt, and said he needed the money for car repairs. Not what a 16 year old who loved shooting and his grandad wanted to hear!

I passed on one in the box , paperwork and in 99% condition at $800, I offered $650 would have gone to $700. The seller was packing it up after the show. It's a 28-2 ,I think a lot of owners are confused between a 27-2 and a 28-2. While the 28 is a fine weapon they are out there at this point and available at reasonable prices.

Mentioned before ...... got my Dad's 5 handguns.... Ranging from a 1938/39 Colt/Kings New Service in .357 to his early Model 41 to the 640 he asked me to get him after he saw mine!!!!

Our LGS has a 28-2 in the used case, 4" barrel, finish appears to be unblemished but I have no idea if it's original or re-blued. I didn't ask them to take it out of the case. I did see the tag, and they want a thousand dollars for it.
