Until a couple of weeks ago, my S&W auto collection consisted of 22 3rd generations and 1 2nd generation pistols. The one 2nd generation is a 669 I bought a 1 1/2 years ago or so. I felt for awhile now that the little 669 needed a 2nd generation buddy, but the only other 2nd generation I have sort of been looking for was a 645. I had seen 3 or 4 for sale over the past couple of years, but they were always pretty well used. So, I just passed on them.

Well, eleven days ago, I walked into a local gun dealer and found three .45 large frame S&W autos with their original boxes in the glass case on consignment. The one on the left was a well used (but not abused) 4506. On the right was a 4566 in the same condition. And there, in the middle, was lovely 645 with adjustable rear sight (I prefer it over the 2nd generation fixed). I asked to see it and immediately noticed (even through some dried preservative) that it was at least close to unfired NIB. The price was $650. I wanted a little discount (I'm a good customer there) so they called seller and he agreed to a 5% reduction in price ($617.50). After completely disassembling and inspecting it, I now proclaim it (IMHO) a true NIB.

Do you agree? ;)

looks very clean and pretty much new to me if it did fire any rounds it was very few and get cleaned very well afterwords. nice find

I stumbled onto mine

at my local gun dealer a couple of months ago. It was almost NIB..the person who had it before me only put 50 rds through it and decided he wanted a 22 auto. I am a wheel gun guy and this was my first auto. I carry it now on a daily basis in my IWB Kholster. I would be hard pressed to ever get rid of it due to the realiability of firing with everything I feed it and the great accuracy in which I get from it. It is a little heavy for conceal carry but the Kholster mostly takes care of that problem. Enjoy :)

very nice, looks to have a 1911 grip to it. i love the 1911 grip and features, fits my hands very well. good luck with it..

just noticed you are holding southpaw and it is ambi, so it was a very good find for ya..

Denver, you going to shoot it?

it does look like it just rolled off the assembly line.

very clean and nice.

DD, you're a lucky man indeed. Nice...Very Nice. I think I may pass on the 645 I was telling you about, because he wants an arm and a leg, much more than what you paid. I am looking now at getting two CS 40's that need some TLC and they will make good carry and car guns. I am the type of guy I just can't make a safe queen out of something. I have a 2 1/2 in blue Python that is primo, but I take it out for a few shots on the range every now and then. So if I picked that 645 up I would be out shootin' the pie plates.

You bet, but I will do so . . . gently and with kindness. One of the good things about having so many S&W pistols and revolvers is that I don't get to shoot any one of them enough to cause any serious wear. ;)

It was easier to hold the pistol in my off hand, I had to save my right hand for the camera work. ;)

Fixed sight

Can a fixed sight 645 have an adjustable sight installed in the dovetail or does the whole slide have to be remachined?
