Found a nice 4" today. Gun has rubber grips, no lock, and as far as I know, no box, etc. One thing I noticed is that the gun is very tight compared to most new and used revolvers of all makes that I have looked at. The cylinder can barrely be wiggled when cocked, or at full lock up. The only problem I see is its priced at $550. Arkansas has high prices on guns.

Around my neck of the woods they go for about $550 to $575, so I would say that is a fair price.

Now go get that gun.

not bad at $550

Last one I saw was a no lock with wood grips in good shape marked $650.

That is a very good price for a 4". Buy it. If you don't like it, you can easily sell it for that.

I just paid $550.00 for my 6 inch 686 with no box, excellent condition. Sounds like a good price to me.

Nope, haven't bought it yet. So, $550 is a good price? That is firm, and + tax. I was thinking that $450 would be about what a 686 was worth, but as I said, guns in Arkansas are usually high and non-negotiable for some reason. Also, I'm hoping to stumble across a nice N frame 357 (28 or 27) one of these days for around the same $$$.

Get it. I very rarely can give input on things like this, I just don't have the experience. But in this case I myself have a 686-5, 4", no lock, came with no box/papers, and it's in the kind of condition you are describing. It would be the last one I let go of. That's a fair price and it's exactly what I paid for mine. After I bought the 4 incher I promptly went out and found one with a 2.5" barrel, no lock. It's a dash 3. These are nice guns and that's a gross understatement.

If you like it and is as nice as you describe, buy it.Nothing wrong with the price either.I'm sure somebody else will be taking it home if you wait too long. And as someone else mentioned you can always get what you paid, if you decide to sell in the future. Its a no brainer, see if you can get him to throw in a box of shells.

Post-up the name of the shop and watch how fast someone on this site buys that gun!

If you pass on the 686 (which I love to shoot) good luck finding an N frame for the same money.

Nice 686

I just got a nice one for $500 and like you I thought it was a little high, but I really like it. Shoots great and like some of the others have said, you can always get your money back. Model 19's are going for about the same price in my area.

Good luck on finding a M27..I let a nice M28 escape a couple of months ago at a gunshow..it was very nice for $400. Been kicking myself for letting it get away.

You probably won't get lucky enough to find one for $450 anymore, maybe 5yrs ago, $550 and in good shape, pick it up. The only way to buy them on the cheap is to find a private owner ignorant of current prices, no deals in a gun shop.

Interesting - I just bought a nice, used 686 4" for $400.00 OTD (so that's $379.00, plus tax & State Police fee) from a local gun shop two weeks ago.

I'll admit, good deals are hard to find, but they do exist.

Take care,

$550 may seem high right now, but 5 years ago $450 seemed high. Buy it. You can always use it as trade bait for an N frame if you decide not to keep it. (But I'm willing to bet once you shoot it, you won't want to trade it.)

If you buy it, you will be glad that you did. I have a 686 no lock that I bought in pretty much unused condition a few years back.
I consider to be the best all around gun that I have.
I also have a 627PC and it shoots no better than the 686 does.

$900 easy in California. I have one from the early 90's and I love the heck out of that bad boy.... Finest all around gun I own.
