An un-catalogued item from S&W, made for the Illinois State Police. My buddy has it and I thought it ought to be shared here. He's a dealer so I bet he sells it. So, before it is gone, I grabbed a photo.

I was thinking these were all made for the New York State Police? And then they ended up not purchasing them maybe... Cool guns either way

I THINK I should buy it. But I know that I won't.
My problem is that since I have a M27 Classic and a M25, plus 4 L frame .357s, and a couple of K frame .357s, I can't justify buying another .357 presently.
I need to check that Illinois story out since S&W did make 3000 M520s for the NY State Police that were never delivered as far as I know.

They're good, rugged guns. A friend who worked for the Pawhuska PD had one he carried. Mac's still got his as far as I know.

Order for nysp, then they just went with m28s, is what I heard. Had a 520 back in 81. Wish I'd kept it

You and me both. I sold it as part of paying for law school and my ex-wife. The law degree, as much as I hated law school and still hate lawyers, has been worth it. The ex? Uh, no. No way. Should have sold her and kept the M520.
FWIW, that revolver has non-stock grips. The stock grips were the plainclothes magnas, IIRC. I would also bet that ISP never gave a hoot about the 520 or any other revolver by that time - they were heavily into the M39 and had been for quite some time by then. They might even have moved to the 39-2 by then; that arcana is not my wheelhouse at all.
The 520 was a one off order by NYSP that they (NYSP) crawfished on with the arrival of the Glock tactical tupperware gun on the U. S. market. Given the increased propensity of negligent discharges with Glocks in police circles it seems apparent that NYSP chose poorly...

Actually, they went with the L frame, newly introduced at the time. NDs with Glocks are directly a result of poor training. One thing I have seen is agencies being afraid of better firearms training, because in fact the better trained an officer is, the more likely they are to actually shoot people they should. Far too many, probably most, command officers would rather go to a cop's funeral than deal with the fallout of a perfectly lawful and utterly inane shooting. (Sadly, there is even research showing this - which makes me want respond in a perfectly uncivil and harsh manner.)

Police agencies are afraid of training because training costs money. As with too many things accountants rule the roost. Before law school I got an accounting degree. While it qualifies me to do accounting it doesn't qualify me to make business plans unless I know that business. Decisions based upon cost accounting aren't necessarily the best business decisions.

DITTO!!! Well, almost ditto. I never had a Model 520. But my happiest day was the SHE'S GONE AND NOT OMING BACK? HURRAY! That day! But I digress.
My buddy insists that this Model 520 was an un-catalogued revolver made for the Illinois State Police. I can't prove it one way or the other but that could explain the "incorrect" stocks.
