I had to take some logs up to the Fish Hatchery up the hill ( to make some bee houses)==we work closely together=the manager was a coach for my leadership team almost 20 years ago!

Anyway, while there the girl I was meeting invited me to go watch them release 400,000 salmon smolts into the creek. Another 400, 000 will be released this afternoon and more next week. That's the survivors of 2 years ago brood.

It was really nice==reminded me WHY I became a biologist!

No salmon here, but here are the figures on what the local DNR fish hatchery did last year.

Each year, 95 million walleye fry, 250,000 two-inch walleye fingerlings, 100,000 six-inch walleye fingerlings, 25,000 seven-inch walleye fingerlings, 1 million northern pike fry, 200,000 three-inch northern pike fingerlings, 1,000 ten-inch northern pike fingerlings, 500,000 muskellunge fry, 25,000 four-inch muskellunge fingerlings and 4,000 11-inch walleye fingerlings are produced at the hatchery.

Most years they have the hatch process going by now but the ice is still covering a lot of the area lakes so that delays the gill neting where they net the females and strip the eggs.
