Friday morning at about 11AM we lost power due to that very nasty storm that chewed up the Adirondacks.

We have a whole house standby propane powered generator and that kept us comfortable. Cable and internet at best was sketchy and out for hours at a time.

We just went back on street power at 9.30AM today. They must have had over a 100 power company trucks and their crews in our area. Must have saw at least 6 different companies from all over up here doing their best to get our rather low population area back on line. Of course that means if 20 people like me are out in a area a place that has a few hundred out gets the service first. Understandable but frustrating never the less.

I trust at this point the power problem is over as I am getting low on propane and in fact lowered the house thermostat a few degrees to help my diminishing propane to hold out, if generator not needed will be great. The propane company is coming Monday or Tuesday so it will be close but think all will work out.

We have no cell service in this area ad our LL phone died yesterday at about 1 o'clock. Tried hard to reach the company but so far we can not. Its a small company but its the best we have up here

O well future is looking up but the weather guesser said we will be getting a few rain storms followed by a little snow in the next couple days (Outside temp as I type this is 8 degrees) Hopeful I can get the propane truck up my rather nasty driveway. If I know when there coming I will sand!

Glad you made it through without being to cold. May I suggest that come summer you invest in a second Propane tank or stand by wood
heating stove. Good luck.

Home is where the heart is, but I must be a cold blooded reptile, my rule is live below Interstate 10. We have our own bad weather, but I have grown to dislike real winter. Good luck on stretching the propane.

I talked with the propane outfit years ago about a second tank and they were not in favor of that. We have a 500, but got to admit everything came together at once. That tank is a rental but if I can buy a 250 from them as a backup I will do it. They say something about tariffs and rules does not allow a another tank.

Will see about restarting that dialog, heck its only a little light duty plumbing and its not legal for me to touch their stuff just because I'm a retire 40+ year pipefitter means nothing. They not happy they will not fill!

We do have a pellet stove but that needs electricity to run, and so far not needed and we normally have electricity.

Thanks for the good will!:)

When I built my house 5 years ago I wanted an underground propane tank but the price went way up because of DEQ regulations and I was in a hurry so I just went with a 500 gallon above ground lease tank. I know you can only buy propane from the company that leases the tank but I assumed the price of propane was competitive and all the companies charged roughly the same. Well, THATS WHAT I GET FOR ASSUMING! They filled my tank and charged me $3.29/gallon when the other local companies were charging $1.89/gallon so they ripped me off about $700 filling my 500 gal tank. When the tank was almost empty I bought a refurbished tank so I could buy my propane from anyone and I had it delivered and told the lease company to come pickup their dang tank! They asked why and I told them and they said they would match the other companies price per gallon and they kept trying to sweet talk me into staying with them and I said you screwed me over once I wouldn't take your propane if you gave it to me now come get your tank or I'll have it hauled off.

Lakes and ponds here are at the brim. Heading to my hunt property here shortly to make sure my overflows are cleared and flowing.

LP tanks are only filled to 80% of their capacity. So your 500 gallon tank only is filled to 400 pounds.

Growing up my parents heated with LP and had a 1000 gallon tank That was 800 gallons. that large home needed 2 to 3 fills a winter and there was no back up generator. The last family to live there had a stand by generator installed, and a total of 3 1000 gal tanks!

Dealing with small local LP companies can be tricky! But try talking to someone in charge and get you LP tank(s) up to 1000 gallon minimum!!! If you get one of those inland Hurricanes you might be without power for weeks. One hit Central Ohio in Fall 2009 and my house was without power for 8 days. In December 24th 2003 an ice storm to out all power for 7 or 8 days but my house was out for 11.5 with temps running -20 to +20. My gasoline generator didn't work, but my "PLAN C" did (truck's power converter) and kept a light and a fan for the wood stove working. (I had a Plan D of 18Volt lights and fans by RYOBI as my final back up)

Now I'm in a condo at power is more stable, but I only have PLAN A and half of PLAN D any more! I'm not a happy camper!
