Well gents I reached out to the fine people at the SWHF and unfortunately it left the factory as a blued gun.
The gun in question is the top right S/N

I have a nickel 18, I lettered it and it originally was blued but pulled off the shelf and nickeled before it went out.

Could that even be the case with the shipping records showing that it left the factory with a blued finish?
I'm guessing that information would have to come out from a letter?
That 18-2 is in need of some Flitz. It took me about 3 hours to work this one over and it could probably use another hours worth.

Model 18 finish change
If a finish change was done at the factory the original features of the gun would be preserved. The hammer and trigger would still be case colored and extractor star will still be blued. If the front sight had a pinned on base the sight base would have been removed and re installed after plating and would remain blued. Just like a factory original nickel finish.
Here is a photo of my 1972 Model 18-3. This gun had a factory finish change in the late 70s. This is very slick great shooting revolver and I burned up a mountain of ammunition mastering DA technique.
I think these guns look great with a nickel finish. If this gun was factory refinished and the price is right it would be worth going for. These are great guns and most people who own them are hanging on to them.

Seams look factory tight. One of the first things that I always look for! The gun is FILTHY.
WOW, I can't believe any LGS would put a gun out for sale looking like that! Doesn't take much to wipe it down with an oily rag. If I had just gotten it on trade etc., I wouldn't even hand it to a potential buyer without wiping it down. Just me, I guess.

I have a couple of guns refinished in nickel by the factory. As far as I am concerned, if you like nicke finishes, they are as good as original. High end collectors might disagree, but I am not one of those.l

If a blue revolver was taken from inventory and the finish changed to nickel, the factory would normally stamp R-N on the grip frame. The revolver would letter as having been shipped with a nickel finish, while preserving its manufacturing record.
