Motorcycle race fans should know that Nicky was hit head on while riding his bicycle in Italy. He is in a trauma center in an induced coma- in need of prayer. Thanks.

I'm not a motorcycle buff.....

....so I looked him up. It seems that Hayden may have run a stop sign on his bicycle but the car was probably going fast because the windshield was shattered. He may have brain damage, but I pray that he makes it through this as well as can be.

I saw a friend today that informed me of Nicky's wreck. His words were "But for the grace of God go I...".

My friend and Nicky raced against each other several times. Only difference in Nicky and my friend is age and timing. My friend realized a few years ago that MotoGP was a young mans game. He sold his 2-wheelers and bought a Polaris Side-by-Side set up for the mud pit.

Class III

I hope he recovers fully, he represented the US well in MotoGP for years and seemed like a class act. Even when Ducati was clearly struggling, he didn't complain and throw fits like some others may have.

Been a hard few years for motorsports, we've lost some good ones, seen others' careers ended. It's always seems worse, though, when whatever happens occurs off the track, when the calculated risk that they are paid for turns into just an accident. Things like Schumacher's accident and now this.

I hope the best for him and his family.

Been aware of Nicky's accident since it happened. I'm a few years older than him and have followed his career since he got his start in AMA Superbikes almost 20 years ago. This has me really bummed out. He is a class act. He's one of those guys who's supposed to hang around as an ambassador to the sport and grandpa's tell their grandkids about him when they get his autograph at a race in 2047.

Nicky did tons of promo work for the Indy Moto GP races when they first began. He GOT the IMS and the IMS got him. He's a INDY celebrity.
Hoping for the best!

My wife and I have been fans of his for a very long time. This is terrible. His father is ill and cannot fly to Italy to be with him, so sad all the way around.

I saw this sad story on the news this past weekend while -- ironically -- I was on a motorcycle trip in the Shenandoah National Park. His prognosis doesn't sound good...prayers for him and his family.

(Thinking about this reminds me of the situation with Michael Schumacher...after spending a career in Formula 1, he suffered a severe head injury while skiing, of all things. More than three years later, he remains out of public view, with very little news coming from his family.)

What a sad day.

In case anyone is wondering, his traditional racing number was first used by his dad who also raced motorcycles back in the day. His dad said that he crashed so often he needed a number that the track officials could read upside down. Nicky used his dads number throughout his career.

I love that story.

I was thinking, "Well, what IS his number?" Is it, '8'? It was 69!

Rest in Peace Nicky. I went to Indy three separate times to get to see him race. He was always a class act and a wonderful representative of the USA in an international sport. He will be missed.
