No Ammo

Obama didn't get us into a two-front war that has been draining the output of the ammo makers. You couple that with the hysteria of brain dead mass-panic hoarding and you have empty shelves everywhere.

The range where I shoot won't even sell ammo anymore, it is strictly for sale if you rent a gun. And they are out of most calibers.

The very definition of panic hoarding....

I do not want to make the guys that don't reload feel bad, but I started just about the time BHO was nominated, or at least started buying the supplies I needed then and started loading about 4 months back. I also started buying a box of shells a week, sometimes more.
9mm, .45acp, .38 special, and .40 fill several ammo containers. Now I have to go to the surplus store again and hope they have some big ammo containers left. I have enough stuff to load for another few months, but I have been running low on certain bullets and some kinds of brass. It is so nice to not have to rely on the gun shop for my ammo!

My retirement money is toast, but I do have my ammo, I really do miss that money!

Well, it's obvious that panic has taken hold. Last week I went online at Midway, my usual source of .38 and .357 ammunition and every single item, with the exception of a couple of cowboy loads, was listed as out of stock, backorders only.

Panic buying is not all that unusual. The gasoline panics of the 1970s and, last summer in my neck of the woods, were part and parcel of the same phenomenon that's caused the current ammo panic. There's a shortage -- real or perceived -- that causes people to begin hoarding beyond their normal consumption. That exacerbates the shortage, which causes more hoarding. Eventually, everyone's buying everything in sight, regardless of immediate need, on the theory that if I don't get mine now it won't be available when I need it. And, as with most panics, this one is fueled by paranoid rumors -- as in Congress is about to pass a law requiring that every round sold has a unique serial number (absolutely untrue).

As with all other panics this one will end, probably when we least expect it to. How? When the hoarders are sated, or when they run out of money, most probably. My guess also is that supplies will soon be augmented, probably because ammunition manufacturers will do what all product manufacturers do when faced with excess demand for their products, ramp up production. But, rest assured, it will end.

I've had a policy since I started reloading. I spend a couple of weeks after work reloading every piece of brass I have. When done and its packed away in ammo cans, I cover the 550B until I run out, then do it all over again. I am sitting on total of five or six thousand rounds of 38,40, and 45 ACPs right now. I timed it perfectly, by accident. Now I'm not sure if I should shoot any!!!

Buy it if and when you can get it. I also broke out my ancient Rock Chucker and started reloading again.

No doubt in my mind that this administration WILL / IS coming after our guns. They have been very sneaky, but no surprize there. Hillary is on a cross country tour saying assault weapons are the cause for the violence between drug gangs along the US/Mexico border.

Pay the $25.00 and join the NRA. Write your Congressman and Senators and speak your mind on your 2nd Amendment rights. There is strenght in numbers and we need to unite now!

My retirement money is also gone along with my job, but it's important to put the blame where it belongs. The economy tanked way before BHO ever got into office, and ammo was already in short supply long before as well.

The price of ammo DOUBLED between 2001 and 2005, and the excuse was:

1) wars were making the components (lead, copper, brass) more scarce.

2) ammo makers assembly facilities were being overloaded with mil contracts.

It is true that the total buyout didn't occur until recently when the pants'wetting panic syndrome took hold, but ammo has been scarce for a long time. Outdoormarksman.com always had Miwall reload 1k cases avalable in 9mm, .40SW, .38 and .45 until the war shoratges set in and then they disappeared.

By no coincidence, all the "cheap" ammo like S+B, winchester, Blazer, etc vanished and all that was around was the overpriced crap.

Now that's pretty much gone as well.

BTW: the "shortage" will end as soon as demand drops, exactly like what happened with gasoline. When people relax and demand drops by as little as 5%, things will stabilize.

Speedo I wish my reloading area looked as neat and organized as yours does, that looks like a classic magazine picture of what they should look like.

If you do NOT reload and have saved your brass I would recommend Mastercast bullet company. I sent them 250 44mag emptys and 100 45 LC emptys and I have them back in 8 days with polished brass and in new boxes,,,,,looks as good as new and shoots great $83.00 shipped to me thats almost as cheap as you can load.....I will be using them again. Look them up an the web for prices.

I almost hate to say this. I found 1 box of Federal .223 for $7.99 of course I bought it. .357 $19.99 bought both of them. Wolf and Bear less than $6 have not bought them, want something I can reload.

No I am not telling where, sorry

badgerbimmer -- it depends on the Cabela's. I was in the one in Ft Worth and they seemed to have plenty, at least what I was looking for: Federal AE 9mm and 50BMG.

That's how much .380 ammo we've been able to get. Most everything else is no problem. We have PALLETS of primers, PALLETS of .22rf .223, 9mm, .40. .45 auto is starting to be a slight issue on availablity, not too bad yet.

What are your prices like? From what I've seen locally if someone has ammo in stock, especially in any quantity it's for a reason and that reason is price.
