Several years until an engineering change comes out to change it to a dash one, dash two etc. The length of time varies form one model to an another.

S&W switched to the number system around 1957 beginning with the .38 special M&P which became the Model 10 but many future models had not come out yet,
For instance the Model 66 came out in 1970 but by that time the Model 10 was already in its 6th revision,
In 1977 the Model 66 got its first revision and became the 66-1

You are correct, it should be a no dash 'cause the 63-1 did not come out 'til 1982 deleting the pinned barrel.

Don't forget, different dash number models can be produced at the same time-- the model 36 and 36-1 (3" heavy barrel) are a good example. The model 25-2 (45acp) and 25-5 (45 Colt) are another.

Larry it should be pinned. If not it's either a transitional to the -1 or someone forgot to stamp it as such. The pin was eliminated in 1982. Give us the serial number and maybe we can pin down what happened.

The dash numbers generally indicate an engineering change, so if no engineering changes are made, you could have a "no dash" for years.

In most cases, the elimination of the pinned barrel did not result in a dash number change. Also, some models, like the Model 10, had a different dash series for tapered barrels and heavy barrels. They ran concurrently. The 10-4 and 10-6, for example, both designate the elimination of the 4th screw on the tapered barrel and heavy barrel, respectively. Both came out in 1962.

There is a no dash, and a "dash no". As is the story on my 627-0.
All things being equal, I prefer the no dash guns if I can find them, with the exception of the 629, in which case I prefer the -4.
