No Primers & No Powder

Sgt Preston here. I went to the York Pa Gun Show last weekend mostly to buy reloading components. There are 2 reloading component suppliers who are always there that I buy from twice a year, every year. There was not a Single Grain of Winchester 231 Powder or a Single Small Pistol Primer of any make to be had. Sooo I guess the "shortage" isn't quite over yet. The York Gun Show is a major show (typically 1500 tables + or -) that fills the York Fair Grounds. I drove 55 miles from Baltimore Maryland to go to the show. Are Powder & Primers readily available in your local areas? Sgt Preston USMC LLA

The closest gun store to me that actually stocks handloading supplies (~30 miles) has just about every type of primer you could want, CCI or Federal, except small pistol, for $33/k. They also have a large stock of Alliant powders. I'm not sure on other brands of powder as I just buy 2400 from them. Other powders I use I get in larger quantities and I order that on the web.
 
Two of our LGSs just received a LARGE shipment of primers. CCI and Federal mostly. Large and small rifle - large and small pistol. Averaging $3.99/100.

My local gun shop has had small pistol primers on and off lately, I picked up 500 remington SP primers (max) when they had some a week or two ago. They have had large pistol and both rifle primers in for at least the last month or so. They are going for $3.19/100. At a show this weekend, there were plenty of rifle primers, some Large pistol for 29.00/1000, and a table that was trying to gouge has some small pistol primers for $40/1000. Powder was there also, usually going for about $22/pound.

howdy boys , I went to the Middletown , Ny gun show in Orange county , they had primers and powder i went to buy a can of 231 , and it was $24 , a small can , I left it I have a spare , gee thats almosr doulble the price . robbt
 
When the eff is production going to pick up to meet demand?
 
Why would it when the demand is that hot?
Also please remember, someone's been running the printing presses filled with green ink 24/7 for a solid year now! At some point that has to start having an effect? Pork, which has been dirt cheap due to producers slaughtering herds is now firming in price. Beef too, had it's floor retail price happen about 3 months ago, and has started it's creep upwards. That's the trouble with having a currency who's ink isn't dry due to the volume of it being printed.
 
had a booth next to atk guys at a shoot a couple month ago. according to them loaded ammo is still taking almost all components, but they did say cci was crawling out of the woods and should have primers on the shelves by now. local dealer here did get in a large shipment of cci primers. they look at spring before anything really becomes available, and that is somewhat subject to obama fears.
 
plenty of primers, all sizes, brass (1st time for me seeing empty 500mag and it was $27 for 50pcs), powder and equipment at the show in atlanta georgia this past weekend. primers were $36-$39 per M. guess we're lucky.
 
Just got a backorder of primers and powder from midsouth shooters supply I ordered in march. Place a order and be patient. It will come.

I go to a busy shooting range/store every week. I have not seen a small pistol primer in 3 months, but they had 10 boxes of Large pistol primers and 3 cases on the shelf below. They been sitting there for a month (Federals at 39.99 a K)
 
Several gunshops in our area have primers....and they are limiting purchases to 1k per day. It's keeping them on the shelf @ $33-34/k

I am lucky...I have always kept plenty on the bench.

I travel a fair amount and all components, including powder, seem to be available EXCEPT primers.

BTW W231 is made by Hodgdon, and Hodgdon sells the same powder under their name, but for the love of me I can't think what the name is. It's a little cheaper than W231 and as soon as I run out of my W231 stockpile I'm switching over.
 
Powder for $22-$24 per pound is easily available locally. There isn't a small pistol primer to be found at the two stores nearest me. If I drive 50 miles I can buy them for $50/1000.

I just don't understand. It should be easy for a manufacturer to crank out ten-thousand an hour. Probably a lot more than that!

I had a buddy that went to the gun show in Jacksonville FL this past weekend.

He said there was plenty of primers in all varieties if you wanted to pay $39. per thousand. :mad:
 
Primers are hitting the shelves here in California. Large Pistol and Large Rifle magnum and standard seem to be most available. Small Pistol and Small Rifle are hit and miss, mostly miss. 209 primers were always on the shelf, dust at no extra charge.
 
Small pistol in VERY short supply in NC Indiana. When found, prices are high. Large pistol, large rifle, and small rifle available here and there for $30-$40/M. Small pistol magnums sometimes available. I don't want them, but people take them because there is nothing else.

$30/M for primers is ridiculous... :mad:

They will ship. As of yesterday they had lots of Primers both Lg. and Sm. and plenty of most powders.
Give them a call, they will take your card over the phone.
 
Went to the show in Mesquite, Texas last weekend. Powder, primers, and loaded ammo are becoming available again in the East Texas area, but they're still trying to hold the prices way up. As example, they were asking over $20.00 for any of the lowest priced powders, and $42.00 per thousand of imported "Wolf" primers. I didn't see any buyers. The local Bass Pro Shop has even less reloading supplies and are charging $60.00 per thousand for primers, and the sky's the limit for their powder and loaded ammo.
 
My local shop is well stocked with Large Primers for both Pistol and Rifle. Haven't had any Small Primers of either type for more than a year now.

Plenty of powder, although one or two types may be in short supply, at least you can find something for any application you want.
 
Starting to see a few primers here in Denver, but at $42.00/1000, I'll wait until the prices go down. Glad I have a stash!

I hear what you are saying, but this isn't inflationary.
