I went to a couple of my LGS yesterday. Picked up my M29 that I had left for repairs at one of them. I don't think they fixed it but that's another post. The second stop is a more modern place but sometimes has a few used guns.
I looked through the used cabinet, a couple of modern S&Ws, some Glocks, etc. I then looked at the new stuff. But on a lower shelf I saw a little old revolver. I asked to see it. It was marked as a Model 34 and was in pretty good shape, despite the wrong grips. It was a flat latch so I figured maybe from the sixties. After inspection, it's a Kit Gun, which I've wanted. They only wanted $500 so I bought it. Serial number 11201, so maybe mid 50s? I kind of like the grips but will wait until I shoot it to see. Its going to be in jail for a while (California), but when I get it home I'll clean it up and try it out. I only got one picture on the counter so I'll get more when I pick it up.

The flat latch does indicate an early revolver, if it is not a replacement.

The stocks, my guess is they are user modified as I do not recall seeing anything like that, ever.

Nice looking revolver, the Kit Gun is a fascinating subject. Many folks seek one and we all have a slightly different description for our ideal kit but S&W defined it for many.

Enjoy yours.

"Non-medallion" Sile on a 34-1 SB. Not as nice as the OP's but functional. Joe

Especially in the California market that is a great deal. Kit guns ( all of them model marked or earlier) are not easy to find and usually quite expensive. My last buy was about 6 years ago ( nickel 34-1 2” square butt) and cost me $595.

It was marked as a Model 34 ........... it's a Kit Gun.................. Serial number 11201, so maybe mid 50s? .
This serial number puts the gun early to mid 1955. It should not be model marked! That was a great buy! If you want different grips, try the J frame targets. They fit RB or SB and make a 4" barrel shot like a K-22!
