Not a S&W but a Ruger.

Figured I'd ask this here since I've found this to be the most helpful and friendly of the gun boards I frequent.

I've had this SP101 since 1992. Noticed when I got it the barrel wasn't quite straight (see pic) but didn't worry about it. It shot well enough for what I considered a contact range gun.

I probably put a couple hundred full-house .357 though it the first couple years I owned it and then it eventually became carried much shot little. I might put a couple cylinders through it each Fall when I would transition from the .380 I normally carry in the Summer to it for the Winter.

Starting back in early 2008 I've become determined to shoot more. There was a time when I'd put 50 rounds a week out of something and I hope to get back to that (not quite there yet).

It was then I became aware of it shooting about an inch off to the left at 7 yards with slow, determined single-action fire. I don't know if I never noticed it before because I mostly shot it double-action rapid since that's its intended application or just don't recall the misalignment of the group or if my grip has changed over the years causing it.

That being said, I do find it interesting that to move the group to the right I'd need to move the front sight to the left which is exactly what would happen were the barrel straightened up.

I see from their website Ruger offers no warranty like S&W does. Anyone here have any experience contacting them with this sort of thing? One concern I have with contacting Ruger is that I've made one modification to the gun: I removed the hammer spur but kept the ability to cock into single action. I worry they might blow me off because I've modified from stock.

I'm temped to chuck it up in a padded vise and see if I could manage to screw it a little tighter but figure that might be the road to disaster. Any thoughts from the more experienced on this?

It won't hurt to contact Ruger before doing any home gunsmithing. In my experience, they stand behind their products, regardless of what's in print. I don't think a hammer spur snip would be a deal breaker. They may return your revolver to original condition, though.

and,
The Sixgun Journal Repatriated Ruger GP

I've only had one Ruger that was even slightly off (Vaquero with a list on the front blade), but it was so minor I corrected POI with load manipulation. Lucky, I guess.

Good luck!

Scott, there is a extensive debate on the Ruger Forum.Net about this issue with the SP101. It seems to me that it has only affected the 357's and not the .22 cal SP101 series. Contact Ruger as they have experience in the "realignment" and seem to do it quickly. Kyle

Just give them a call and they will take care of you. I've had really good luck the few times I needed any help. Ruger has a lifetime warranty on their handguns.

A few years ago, I bought a new redhawk. When it showed up, the barrel was not right either(tilted to the left) I called and they sent the postage label and I dropped it off at UPS. In order to make it up to me, they smoothed the action while it was there. They payed the postage both ways on the gun.

yessir, it sems they have some "strong" guy assembling the barrels on many of their guns as there is a LOT of them coming up "over tightened" ? too far over , to the left, and yes, as said above its has been an "issue" and they will take care of it, I have no clue as to the statement" they do not offer a warrenty like S&W does..."??? they do.....
give the service department a call..........
