My wife went and bought some stuff for a friend who is having a baby. She bought a stroller that was over $100- it's one of Target's private brands, so it can't be bought anywhere else...

My wife finds out that she doesn't need the stroller, and was going to return it and get some other items, but in the mean time, she lost the receipt. I'm a serial receipt keeper myself, and it drives her nuts.

Anyway, when she tried to return it for a store credit or something, they told her she could only return it on other baby items. It couldn't be spent anywhere else in the store. Because it was above $75.00, they couldn't do anything else.
We'll just donate it to a worthy family.

I know the old lesson that something shouldn't be bought in the first place if there's even a slight chance it may have to be returned later...but with their competitor's having more open return policies after research, she won't be visiting them any more. I've never bought anything from them...the stores look too Dr. Seuss like to me.

The older I get, the less I like the "big box" stores. Inventories and policies are set in some big city a thousand miles away, and they don't make sense in Tulsa, or Blairsville, or wherever else. But they've got cheap **** from China!!

Two Devious Sneaky Methods for Revenge:

1) Return the $100+ item for store credit for baby goods.
But baby items that are under $50 each.
Return these items for store credit.

2) Set-up out front with a sign offering the stroller at a discount.
Print handout explaining the stores policy and your lost receipt.


NO Revenge method:

Let the new mother return the stroller for store credit.

She can use the credit for needed baby good.

This surprises me. I always thought Target had a very liberal return policy. My reason for not shopping there would be because they will be open Thanksgiving night. That's what I have a problem with.

I would have asked for a manager. Target used to have one of the best return policies of anyone. Even with no receipt.

I do not shop the store as they have nothing I want. The female clan seem to like it.

I also save every receipt for anything I buy.

If the item was purchased by credit card they can look it up with that.

I have not been in a Target store in 10 years. Back then, they were approached by my Cub Scout pack to support our Blue and Gold Banquet. They flatly and quite nastily refused, stating that they only supported "educational causes". Same when my FOP Lodge solicited them for a donation for "Shop With A Cop", our Christmas program for needy families. They have softened their stance somewhat as far as charities go, but I will never shop at a Target again.

I have come to the conclusion that "Guarantees" doesnt mean squatt! What are you going to do? Hire a lawyer to make them enforce it? I have had some bad experiances as has everyone else. Once I ordered a windsheild for a airplane. I didnt open the crate right away as we wernt ready to install it. It was broken in the box probley from the freight company. I took them to small claims and lost. They sent a lawyer to fight me and it no doubt cost them 3 or 4 times the cost of the windsheld to win!
Another time I bought a extended warranty on a new 85 ford ranger. I made one payment on the truck and the ex ran off with it and her new boyfriend. It was like a month + later before I ran her to ground and literaly stold the truck back. The power steering unit was leaking. I took it to ford for repair. They said come back next week. I looked at the odometer and noticed there was almost unbeliveably 11,950 miles on the truck. Not to worry, had the plastic extended warranty card to handle it past 12,000 miles right? Wrong! Got it fixed a couple days later and we have a problem. Its a couple miles over the 12K and in fine print on a mountain of disclaimers that no normal person reads, they dont fix anything that has to do with a fluid leak!
Seldom, if ever, have I had a bad product fixed or exchanged! Just who is really going to hire a lawyer and go to court to see if they can win on anything costing under $1,500`s?

I've never had a problem with returns at Target. And I've never heard of returning something, with or without a receipt, and only being able to exchange the returned item for items in the same department. Maybe it's a manager's decision. If so, your Target needs a new manager.

The only thing I have ever returned that HAD to be returned for the same item were DVD's or CD's. I guess that is to keep people from copying the disc and returning it. That seems reasonable to me. However, returning an unused, unopened item and having any restrictions on the use of store credit is ridiculous.

It's not a "managers decision", it is a nation wide policy. My daughter in CO had similar problem. Her daughter received birthday presents (clothing) that didn't fit and returned without any receipt. This was in the Spring and they had returned some Christmas presents a couple months before, same reason didn't fit. They were told they would be given only a 50% return value since it was in the same year that they previously returned something without a receipt, and they would not be able to return anything for the remainder of the year!

Needless they do not shop at Target any longer.

I returned 2 pairs of jeans to a local Target yesterday on 11/21. I bought them on 11/20. I saved the receipt and left all the tags on the jeans. Got a full return. I don't try on pants in discount or any other stores. I find it difficult unlacing boots, and changing pants in a 2X2' room. Then redressing, rebooting myself. Since I've been on my own for a long time I've learned some stuff about retailers. The receipts are all printed on thermal paper now. If you have any inkling you might need to return the item protect the receipt from heat and light. Don't stick it in your wallet, keep it with the bag the thing came in. I looked on the net and found that Target has a return with no receipt policy that state anything returned over $75 without a receipt gets credit only for the dept. which the original item came from. Conversely, Walmart will take half eaten apples back with no receipt. It's sad what I've turned into. A shopper. I used a coupon last week, what's next?

My daughter is the Loss Prevention Officer for a major dept store, so they have to protect themselves in some manor on returns without receipts. You would not believe the records that they keep. She has shown me films of people that pick up items in the store and go directly to the Customer service desk and request a return. Not saying that everyone that does not have receipts for items are in this category. Anytime something is bought as a gift always ask for a gift receipt.

I went to town once and saw a sign for Target, couldn't believe it, a store just for targets! Went inside and they didn't have one target in the whole darn place.

I told them I would take the big one on the outside of the building. They didn't see any humor in that.

Just a big mis-labeled box.........they don't have any thing I would ride back into town for.

Tarzhay has nothing I want, or can't find somewhere else I like to shop. But their bags are useful at the range, so my sweet old Mom saves them for me. Somehow I get some kind of sick pleasure out of shooting something that comes from that store chain.

Why would a business take back an item without a receipt? I must be really old.

And why would you get mad at them because they refused to be shaken down, I mean, contribute, to your personal interests?

Businesses aren't benevolent associations. They offer products and services, and if they're better at it than their competitors, they make money. It's called capitalism, and I don't have a problem with that.

I do agree with that- every company does exist to make money.

However, I do agree that as a customer, store policies help me make purchasing decisions as much as competitive prices.
The policies outside the culturally accepted norm are what makes me a bit irritated.

The local hardware store is better than this- I buy something...and it doesn't fit...I take it back and get something that does- I don't need a stink'n receipt.

Major retail is a cut throat business. Computers allow their stores to track business by dept. and match it against last years sales for that day by dept.. That info is matched to other stores across the country. When they sell you something they never want to see it again. Retail sales reports include returns for cash and credit. Returns for credit won't effect dept sales as long as the credit purchase goes back to the same dept.. People won't buy returned merchandise, because most of the time it looks "returned". Most returned merch. not only deducts from store/dept. sales for the day, but is unusable, and goes I no not where for some type of credit.

Frankly, around here, we used to have a couple Army/Navy stores, and a "smoke damaged, fell off a railroad car" store I'd rather shop at, but they're all gone.

Squeeze out a kid, buy items, return when they're no longer needed.

I bought a new coffee maker at Wally's. Got it home, opened it up and found a USED coffee maker.
Careful inspection showed a second layer of packing tape on the bottom of the box where the THIEVES had resealed the box before returning. So THEY got a free coffee maker & I had to... well... felt weird...

Target used to have a REALLY easy return policy. You could return ANYTHING, even without the receipt, if you still had the box.

People REALLY took advantage of Target's return policy, and now they have swung the other way.

But: if you think Target is bad, NO NOT buy anything from Best Buy: they charge a restocking fee on some items, even when the box is still factory sealed, and you have the receipt!

It's like: hey: we sold this, and we aren't giving the PROFIT back.

i haven't been in a Best Buy for at least 5 years.

I quit using Target for one simple reason......they do not support our troops. Locally they refused to support any charity to support our troops, yet they openly supported gay rights. If it wasn't for our troops, you wouldn't have gay rights! Our troops gave us the freedom to be whatever we want to be in life.

Wal-Mart accepts returns with or without receipts and mostly without question. No receipt gets store credit. Receipt gets cash or store credit if you ask for it. If you are a frequent returner, they become suspicious and may bar you from the store,.
