Nothing quite like the smell of Hoppe's #9 in the morning...

I just finished cleaning my M1911, and as usual when Hoppe's #9 is involved, the whole basement smells like it. And, so do my hands. Can't wait to see how many odd glares I get when I go to the store later.

Indeed.

Other good smells are bacon and coffee in the morning, biscuits and gravy, freshly plowed soil, and fresh cut grass (as long as it isn't too wet or moldy).

My wife hates the smell of Hoppies. So as a reward, I poured a little into one of her empty bottels of Channel perfume. I don't recommend that stunt.

I also believe that women's perfumes smell great, but they are doing it wrong. I've told Mrs GED if she wants my undivided attention, she should just dab a little Head Country BBQ sauce on her neck. Or perhaps some bacon grease or maybe a little Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce would be a goodun too!

Yeah, ya gotta love that smell! Got lucky sort of when I spilled a quart bottle of it in that green shag carpet that was standard apt. eqipment in the 70's. I loved the smell it gave the joint but my wife had a different opinion!

And is it just me, or does it not even smell as strong now as it did probably 10 years ago? I bought a new bottle yesterday since I didn't have any to use, and I thought it was fairly mild.

Or are we just losing our sense of smell because of it...

I bought enough of the stuff years ago so I am probably using the old formula which smells just as good as ever.
It reminds me of my father cleaning his 12 Gauge J.C. Higgins pump after pheasant hunting at my grandmothers when I was a child.

Now hold on the greatest smell in the whole world is burning gun powder then salt cured ham frying in a cast iron pan then biscuits then hoppes #9 oh and after that fresh rain on a cool morning as i sit outside with a cup of coffee.

Hoppes No. 9 is a classic. It's an aroma that you will remember for ever. My first encounters with it were about 1953-54. It's still just as pleasing today as it was then.

That way, you can just dip the whole gun in the wonderful #9 goodness.

The fumes might be a tad on the stout side though.

Good grief, I've never seen a bottle any bigger than maybe 8 or 16 oz...

By the way, does the spray can version work as well as the bottled version? I mean, I assume it is the exact same stuff, but you never know...

Hoppies is also as good as a splash of gasoline-perhaps even better-when it comes to hiding those pesky strange smells too

Hoppes has a fine smell, but for me there is nothing like fresh brewed coffee and frying bacon in the morning.

No Hoppes for me. I gave it away because of the smell. Its smell was too strong and too unlike what my grandfather and father used.... my guns just didn't smell right after I cleaned them.

What did your grandfather and father use? I know some guys that use mixtures of hydrogen peroxide, and two other chemicals (each is 1 part of a 3 part mixture) to clean their stuff... But I tend to think it rusts too well. I mean, hydrogen peroxide is H2O2... The chance for oxidation of the metal is too great, IMO, unless you oil it afterwards.
