It's not bad enough that ebay forces you to have and use PayPal, now PayPal has decided my verified account did not have enough personal information to satisfy "government agencies" so they locked my payments.

PayPal required me to upload a scan of a government issued current photo I.D., a current utility bill showing the same name and address plus a birth certificate, Social Security Card, W-2 or other government form with my SSN less than six months old.

Wow, I provided much less personal information to get my first mortgage. Really don't understand why they need so much info since I don't have a home business plus, my total PayPal and ebay transactions are very far under the requirements for tax reporting.

Anybody else experience this lately?

I wonder how their "monopoly" of payment methods at RIDICULOUSLY high rates has accounted for their huge loss of income, customers and members.

I think it's a combination of "people" and "greed"(on both sides). I don't like ebay's policies, but I "do" remember when sellers were abusing the system...........selling an item for $2 and charging $25 for shipping to reduce final value fees. I look at alternatives, and use ebay only when it's to my benefit. FWIW

New banking laws?

Same here, I had to provide more information. PayPal has to abide by some of the same rules as banks. Since the financial crisis of 2008, banks have had to change their procedures. I recently refinanced my home at a lower interest rate with the same bank I had my mortgage. Holy cow, there was a lot more paperwork and "physical evidence" required. Mind you, not to prove income - but to prove who I was. They even made write a letter as to why I used a PO Box. Guess we've gone from one extreme to another. Looks like it finally caught with PayPal/Ebay. So far, I've found PayPal reliable, which is more than I can say for the folks at USPS - they just lost a USPS Money Order, sent by Priority Mail. Talk about a hassle - just try to get one of those replaced!

Are you 100% certain you're dealing with the real PayPal?

Like a couple others, I suspect this may be a scam, which are common. I've never heard of having to provide all that to PayPal. Sounds like someone trying to do some heavy-duty identity theft.

Did you get an email from Paypal telling you to give them this extra info, or was a notification posted when you logged into Paypal? Getting that by email would be the easiest way to scam you.

I have had an account for years with Paypal - for both buying and selling Ebay. And I have never had to give them that much info - ever.

FYI: For more than 2 years now eBay has been charging final value fees on shipping amounts as well to wrangle in the fee avoiders. And now since last year if your shipping is above normal, they flag the listing and have you adjust or prove the shipping costs.

I hope you didn't get that via an e-mail and click the link. Always sign into your accounts from the known web page. You'll be alerted of any messages in Paypal through the main log-in as well.

If you did receive an e-mail that "appears" legit, simply forward it to [email protected] and you will get a reply if it is legitimate or not.

Ignore it and go direct to Paypal yourself, not from the link in the e-mail. I don't think it' s real I get these sorts of scams several times a week, all are phishing scams to try to hack the paypal account.

As Grayfox and Hillbilly 77 have said....and I'll make it a me too....I got along for 99% of my life without E:bay or PayPal, so why should I need it now?

Without the E:Bay or PayPal, it just makes me get off my dead rear-end and out to the farm sales to buy stuff I don't need. There sure ain't no handling or shipping charges tacked on the stuff I buy either.:)

On a plus side, it's fun to watch other folks buy stuff they don't need.:D

I have absolutely refused to 'verify' my Paypal account.
I use a credit card to buy, I don't sell.
They have threatened to close my account, burn my green card, etc. They have warned me of the dangerous
financial situation I am creating by not fully cooperating with them.
I'm not sure how I was able to be financially successful for so long without their help.
The reason that its so hard to tell Ebay from a scam is EBay is a scam!

Unfortunately, it becomes necessary to use sites like Amazon and eBay to buy things that actually are needed. Many parents will tell you that just for the back to school time of year. It also saves a lot of hassle dealing with crowds, traffic and going through the hassle of going to a store only to find something is sold out and they tell you it can be ordered online from their warehouse.

It really has become more than a novelty or convenience, sometime it's the only way to get merchandise you need Ina timely manner...

Well RevolverDen, I hate to be the one to suggest this, but you ought to buy a snow shovel now, before you need it December 14th, and the store is sold out!!!!! Sometimes a person just has to think ahead....

As far as a convenience goes, to me it's like buying a jug of milk at the convenience store...Yep it's convenient, but I know I'll pay more...So I'll either wait, or buy two jugs of milk when I go to town to the grocery store.
Oh well, everyone has their priorities.

I got the request when I tried to buy an item on ebay. Logged into PayPal and they requested the information.

Yes I never click on a link provided in a email. I don't trust anyone. I will go to the site and see if there are any notices I need to look at. I always pass a email to the spoof department just to check if it is real or not. Seems to have worked so far. As for PayPal have you noticed how many stores accept it for payment now. The must be raking in the dollars with their fees. I haven't gotten the PayPal email yet so I guess I better get my money out from the items I just sold and into the bank before they freeze my account.

Now Off Topic.
I have a high body count on eBay. I hardly use it anymore as most of the junk you find on there is either fake or cost as much or more then just looking for it. I have found stuff on Amazon that sold for quite less then on eBay with free shipping from both. People want to get their original investment back or run their stores there. I don't hardly sell but had some classic car parts and figured to widen my area of concern. PayPal takes a fee, eBay takes a fee you get cheaper shipping on some things, note I listed and it gave a shipping price, go to ship shipping label it was $40 more then in the listing that I would have to pay not the buyer as their shipping price was in the listing. Call them and after going back and forth with eBay and PayPal for over an hour they call UPS and give me a price. I take the box to Staples and get a shipping quote and it was $15 less then all the others. It wouldn't even let me charge insurance or signature required in the cost. eBay is only good now if your looking for an item they are allowed to sell and is OOP. I joined back when they first came about and you could get some real good deals then, now like I said I will check Amazon first, besides under Amazon smiles I give a donation to the 2nd amendment foundation for almost every thing I buy which is a lot over the year and I get almost all of my items in two days. I need to stop buying things I don't need.
