Shots fired inside Rocky Mount mall :: WRAL.com

There was a shooting tonight inside my local mall. I mean I just don't feel safe anywhere in the damn city. I had a friend get abducted and robbed at Wal-Mart, now there's a shooting at the mall. What's next? Not to mention the attempted terrorist attack on an airplane today.

I'm sick and tired of this senseless violence and pieces of **** thug wannabes. They need to grow the **** up or get out of my town.

Is there anyway to stop this mess, or are we doomed from now on?

I don't see any way to STOP it, but it can be AVOIDED. Whenever I MUST go to a place where large numbers of people congregate I do it during the hours of least likely confrontations. In the case of malls, first thing in the morning when they open. Ever notice the hours of most common occurence in places like these????? AVOID those hours!!!!!

Those of us who carry weapons have recognized that our world continues to be a dangerous and unpredictable place. We know that the worst things can happen at any time and any place.

So, we prepare ourselves as best we can. We should also avoid confrontations whenever possible, walk away when we can, run away when we must, and do the necessary in the extreme.

Stay prepared. Our world shows no signs of becoming any safer in the immediate future.

I'm glad no one was hurt. This doesn't bode well for the future though.

"The suspects were later identified as a 14-year-old, a 15-year-old and 16-year-old Murray Chamberlin of Rocky Mount."

Anybody want to take a guess as to why carry permit aplications are up? Sadly, you are not the only one who is pissed off.

....or gladly, depends on how you look at it.

This morning I told my pastor that there was another installment in my life of constant gunfire. He cringed and said, "Oh no"! Actually this week's installment wasn't bad at all (free meat). The local cops shot a deer in front of my house as I was getting ready for work one morning this week. It had been hit by a car.

In addition to that, my wife and I ran into a would be mugger at the end of the summer while walking downtown for dinner. He was approaching us from about our 5:00 and about to launch his assault when my hands dropped into my front pockets and I gave him "that look". He knew he was dead if he persisted and went looking for greener pastures. One thing I've figured out is that when street people see your hands go into your pockets they read the writing on the wall with perfect clarity.

About a month ago a car full of what must have been drunks pulled into my driveway at 4:00a.m. on a Sunday morning and tried to get into my house. They tried the doorknob and beat on the door (not smart, with all their hollering, I had the front door covered with my Ithaca 37 [like I said really not smart at all ;)]). We hollered back and forth, me insisting that they leave, them literally yelling back that "we got your homeboy". When I heard them using keys in my front door (to no effect, I still don't know who those Bozos were) I lowered the barrel of the shotgun, after all they weren't using a sledgehammer. After leaving a generous offering of vomit on the walkway to my front door, they piled into the car they showed up in and left.

Think about the above examples. I used good sound tactics (even with the down deer, I took off my guns before approaching law enforcement in order to simplify the situation by not having to inform, per Michigan law [are you in Michigan?]) and came out, not only unscathed, but never had to fire a shot.

My point is, stick around this forum, get training on an ongoing basis, shoot regularly and be a student. Also keep in mind that if the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem starts looking like a nail (I don't think that's you). By not wanting to shoot, I didn't before it was necessary, or legal in each case, everyone walked away, and life is still good. :D

I don't avoid malls in my locale, I use sound tactics. YMMV

Situational awareness, always carry. There are some really insane individuals out there and it's not going to get any better. Protect yourself and your loved ones.

I'm no more than a couple of miles from the Lane Bryant store in Tinley Park, IL where six women were shot (five died) in 2008. Tinley Park never really struck me as a "bad" or "dangerous" neighborhood. Of course the State of Illinois previously made the decision that having five women murdered was a better outcome than one of them defending herself with a concealed handgun.

This is what liberal politics in this country has gotten us . . . two or three generations with a compliment of worthless thugs.

I'm fortunate to live in AZ, at least as the CCW laws go. Got my permit years ago after I caught 4 young men attempting to break into my truck in my driveway. I've never looked back. Maybe we can remove some of the anti-gunners next election!

I have relatives in Rocky Mount. My aunt used to work at some pharmaceutical company, maybe Abbott's? Her drive to work was quite frightening for her.

I hear you. Last Friday, at one of our Round Table Pizza parlors in Salinas, CA., my family and I were just finishing dinner and getting ready to leave when two masked gangbangers entered with guns drawn and ordered us to the ground. I reached down for my Walther TPH .22 that was in my ankle holster and had a clear shot on one suspect, but had no visual on second suspect. I decided to protect the family and let them get out. I now have taken my baby Glock out from vacation and carry that one everywhere. I'll be better prepared next time with bigger hardware. How dare they...the scumbags!

Yep that would be Abbott. What made her drive to work frightening? Did she have to travel through a ruff area?

All the best,
SD

Wow, that had to be very scary for you and your family. Glad to hear your ok though. ;)

It's a crying shame that we have to live in fear, in these times of gang bangers & terrorists, etc. I carry every where, & if it is a place where guns are not allowed I simply do not go there, period.

SD, my aunt did indeed drive through a bad area. I forget her address, but I do know when the floods came about 9 or 10 years ago her apartment was near the area that got the brunt of it.

Are you a lifetime resident of Rocky Mount? If so, I bet you know my uncle Ray, everyone does.

Oh I see. Hurricane Floyd did alot of damage in this area. My neighborhood did fine except for a few broken trees and no power/running water thank God.

And I've moved from VA about 10 or 11 years ago here to NC. Ray doesn't sounds too familiar, what's line of work does he do?

Have a safe New Year everybody! :D

Thanks, senior dep. You know....I wasn't too scared for myself only because I was very concerned for my family. I had my Walther pulled out and just waited for the right moment, which never came. I've only been retired 2 1/2 years from the Monterey Co. Sheriff's Office as a detective and was amazed how all the years (30 Yrs.) of police training instincts started kicking in on how to respond to this incident. All my ex-partners said I did the right thing though. I'm just pissed that they got away with no bullet holes in them!

Glad you and the family are OK Yahmo!
It'd be an awful thing for a guy with 3 decades as an LEO to get it on the floor of a restaurant along with his family (shudder).
Nope, no place is safe anymore. The real trouble is, only about 25% or so of the population really realizes it. That's why I'm sure there's always some dope who tries to hold up their camera cell phone to get video?
And people worry about the Lead in chinese toys!

I live on the coast of the Atlantic. People go out in boats and wind up drowning here on a fairly regular basis. Still, compared to the total number of people who go out on boats around here, its a very few people who drown. I also go out on the water frequently. Do I fear drowning? No, but I respect the water and know it will kill me if I act stupidly and don't prepare for emergencies. I don't go out in bad weather or when it is predicted. I don't drink booze when on the water. I pay attention to the environment. I NEVER go out without my PFD(Personal Floatation Device) and I actually wear it.

I consider the carrying of a firearm to be very similar to wearing my PFD. I don't expect to have to use it. I do all that I can to avoid needing it. I wear it despite the ridicule I get sometimes. The bottom line is it is my life that ends if I badly need it and don't have it or don't know how to use it or panic and don't use it correctly or wear a cheap one that may fail when I need it most. Wearing my PFD allows me to feel safer that if I don't. Its a pain to wear it sometimes but it is better than dying in the water.

Like the threats from criminals and deranged people, the sea can turn nasty and/or other idiots can collide with your craft, etc., no matter how well you plan. I don't intend to wind up being a chunk of dead flesh washing up on the beach if I can avoid it. I don't go out with constant fear either. Being prepared for danger helps reduce fear. I don't think there has ever been a time when there aren't any predators to worry about. The sea is always dangerous, even when its calm. anyone who thinks otherwise is either ignorant or deluded.

Yahmo provides a great lesson!

I'll be better prepared next time with bigger hardware.
That reasoning is exactly why I carry multiple big, powerful guns if possible. Yahmo has lived, thank God, to say that he could have done better by carrying more. We can learn from his experience, or maybe someday learn the hard way, perhaps with worse results. What you have with you is what you will have to fight with. In each situation I detailed earlier in this thread, I didn't feel undergunned. If all I had was a P3AT, I most certainly would have.

Thank you for sharing, Yahmo. I'm glad you and your family survived unscathed. :)

WOW!!! A town in the PRC that allows CC for law abiding citizens? I honestly did not think anyone other than LE or criminals were allowed to carry concealed in the PRC.

Could not have said it better Sir! I always have my snub 36 on as a minimum but have my H&K P7 and CZ-82 strapped on when leaving the house and going into town.

Was back to packing revolvers but with the local gang activity growing want the extra firepower and faster reloads that a semi provides me. The b******* travel in packs and I feel much more comfortable with 2 weapons on with 20+ rounds ready to go. I'm 2 hours from Rocky Mount and have seen crime increase 40% in the last 3 years in our once peaceful town.

Might sound paranoid, I call it prepared but I have a 3 month supply of food and water and a getaway survival kit for when the SHTF. Recommend the same for everyone else.

Remember Katrina? The government CANNOT provide for your safety and welfare and that folks is a fact!

Not only is the government unable to provide your safety, it is not obligated to according to the "supreme" court. I believe that's why the Second Amendment was written. I had a guy come at me years ago with a huge wrench while I was sitting in my personal car. I don't know what his beef was, but my S&W 39 changed his direction quickly. The tiger became a pussycat. I retired after 34 years as an LEO and ALWAYS carry a .38 SPL +P, .357, .44 SPL or a .45ACP, depending on where I'm going. I've given up all my little carry guns except for the KELTEC P3AT...which is my BUG. Being alert, aware of the laws, trained and capable is the best insurance. Play "What If". It conditions your mind. Always remember that even a "good shoot" will be subject to the highest scrutiny and a civil action. I'm happy to hear that our friend with the TPH made out OK. I suspect that piece will become his BUG now. Vote carefully in the future and be safe!

The city? Be very careful about assuming that the rural areas are that much safer. I have found that many rural people are in denial about how much crime really occurs out in the country.

I agree.

Most of the small towns I have seen have very few cops and with backup being often hours away and the fact that working in a small town with its inherent politics...well, you get the picture.

In several small towns I have travelled to, the same stuff that goes on in the inner city goes on there, it just either ain't reported or "doesn't make the blotter". Gang Bangers, drug dealers, and other types of human scum go from the big cities to rural areas for the"easy pickings" not seeming to realize, at least in some parts of the country, they find the locals are better armed than large city police forces. The occassional meth labs turn up, too.

Many of the small towns (less than 1500 population) I have been through in my travels I would not want to live in.

Thanks flop-shank. You make some good points for all of us to share and learn. I definitely learned that what you carry is what you will be taking to battle. I'm actually going to go qualify with my S &W model 29, 6 1/2 barrel next month when we start up re-qualifying. Having been on our pistol team for a long time, I know I'm accurate with whatever is in my hands, but it will be a .357 and up that will be in my hands for now on. My baby Glock feels good in my hands again! Take care out there. It's a jungle! Family is doing fine. Luckily, my 2-yr. old grandson won't remember a thing about this.

Sniper-47, I am retired LE from the Monterey Co. S.O. But you're right though, only retired or active LE along with the scumbags are allowed to carry concealed. When I retired, the Sheriff gave me my ccw and my duty gun (Glock 22) as my retirement gift. I now carry the baby Glock with me everywhere! Be safe out there!
