My question isn't whether SD insurance in general is worth it, but whether the NRA's SD insurance program is worth it?

I recently got an email from them advertising their endorsed coverage & was wondering if anyone's got any experience with it or an alternative insurance program for SD coverage.

I have NRA insurance because I am an instructor.
Never had to make a claim, but I'm not about to be without it, and the price is decent. Most general policies only cover accidents, not intention use of a gun, so the cheap riders attached to homeowners policies are NOT the same coverage.

NRA Insurance

I teach NRA certified courses. I would not be without liability insurance. I carry $1,000,00000 worth of insurance for $350.00 a year premium and you can't beat the price for what they cover. Today, students will not hesitate to sue the instructor even if it is their negligence. The NRA has various policies and premiums for the instructor.

I think that Bedrockk's question is about "Self Defense" insurance, NOT Instructor Insurance (which I also have thru NRA).

I don't know the answer, but read thru carefully at what they cover and when (reimbursement after the fact or paying the attorney as the case progresses), do they pay civil lawsuits only or also for criminal defense attorney? etc.

Yeah, I meant personal self-defense insurance. :)

So did I.
Let me clarify: I would not be without the personal self-defense insurance, in addition to the NRA instructors liability.

Why? You need comething to cover intentional use of a gun, while ordinary liability only covers accidents.

I don't know how they are with a claim, since I never had to make one, and don't know anybody involved in a shooting that had the NRA insurance. I know one fellow who had no insurance that covered an intentional shooting who said he spent $40,000 in a simple case that never went to trial, and he was cleared.

Before I finally dropped all of my certifications, I carried liability insurance. I was a Training Counselor, Instructor, LEO instructor, Refuse instructor, Chief Range Officer instructor.

At 79, due to some health problems, and the amount of time it took just to remain current, I dropped all of my certifications.

If you instruct--get insurance!!

or an alternative insurance program for SD coverage.

I was sent some literature from "USCCA" including liability insurance they offer called Self-Defense Shield. Don't know anything more about it nor do I know anyone who has it.

I also called my State Farm agent about possibly buying liability insurance since I have a CCW. He said basically he could offer nothing.

I am really suprised there isn't more discussion of this. Are the majority of CCW holders just hoping/praying they don't need the insurance and are not carrying any additional liability insurance?

I often hear "I'd rather be judged by twelve than carried by six". I agree but have been told that would cost in the neighbor hood of $50K if everything was perfect.

From the looks of fundraising efforts in parts of Florida it costs much more if things aren't "perfect".

Thnks for this info. I had never considered this option. You are right about their board; those are some heavy-hitters.

Those are three options that someone with a CCW could/should consider. Hmmmm.....
