This is sort of a specialized question for the collectors of such things. Were all NY-1 revolvers, 60s and 64s originally bead blasted?

Not a collector but this NY-1 marked 64-4 is "bead blasted" or maybe "vapor honed" whatever that is. Ain't shiny at all. Joe

I'm no expert, but the Model 60 NY-1 I had (BAA 7178) was not bead-blasted (it had a standard S&W stainless finish) when I got it (used (obviously) and reconverted to DA/SA) from whichever wholesaler was blowing them out in . . . was it '91?

Early 64’s weren’t. By 1989-1990 they were. And the serial number was also laser etched under the cylinder so cops who changed grips could have the serial number checked at qualification.

The Model 60 wasn’t around long enough for it. They were soon unauthorized due to light primer strikes. Cops were given coupons to trade theirs back to S&W for credit towards a Model 640. They weren’t even allowed to be carried anymore although you could keep them. The job did the same thing to the Kahr K9. Since we bought our own guns it was rare to tell a cop they couldn’t carry something they had been authorized to carry and paid for themselves.

The NY-1 Chiefs (Model 60s) I've seen have the standard satin
finish of the time.

NYPD's Equipment Bureau didn't sell mine to an officer. NYPD
returned it to S&W--one of 1,253--and the company converted it
to SA/DA and sent it to a different distributor in late '89.

Thank you all for the info. My dad picked up one of the model 60s that got sent back around if you will. It has a standard hammer and a “normal” finish. I was sort of curious if it got buffed up by S&W when they resold them or just someone on the street.

If we only knew then what we know now. Guys were selling their DAO NYPD marked revolvers for like $100 to pay for the night sights for their new free 9MM. Now they go for over a grand.
