NY State permit

I received my permit from Westchester County, NY last month. It took 3.5 months to process my application even though they said it could take up to six months. All things considered I was pleasantly surprised by turnaround time

It is somewhat backwards that you can't touch a handgun in NY state wo a permit but need to supply a serial number of a gun that you intend to own once the permit is approved (hopefully). I went to visit a friend in the friendly state of AZ to shoot and handle various pistols before selecting a my first gun (pc 686). Just a thought for you if you have the ability to visit another state with fewer restrictions.

I'll take surprise like that!!!!!! Lived in Pa you do not even need a permit to purchase a pistol and took less than two weeks to get my carry permit. Sometimes I think NY state and other states like it make you jump through hoops in hopes you say "to H_ll with it". Just seems like a bunch of liberal BS to me. Adds whole new meaning to it's not about guns, it's about control.

I grew up in NY state. I moved to ohio in 1988. I would never move back. I used to hunt deer all the time. You didn't need a permit for a shotgun or rifle in the 1970's anyway. But between the sky high taxes and the unconstitutional gun control laws I will never move back or to california for that matter. Good Luck:(

BTW to buy a gun in Ohio from another person.. just show each other drivers license and swap $ for iron:))
From a dealer it's the 5 minute ATF background check. Only CCW required if you want to carry concealed. Open carry doesn't need a permit. The way the constitution intended it to be.:D

for hand gun ny do i need to list arrest only charged with a volition when i was 18 and one when i was 22 i am now 37, never charged with a mis or felonly just a violition

I ask because my family lived in upstate NY in the 50's. My Dad had a carry permit; it has his photo and the serial # of a 22 revolver and its description, thumb print.....

from 1957!

It has not expired yet, "...until revoked..." and I don't think it has been revoked yet.

Hand written on the bottom is "Investigation OK".

I grew up in NewYorkkistan (Buffalo) and after my first hitch, got my permit in 87...says the same thing on it.

You couldn't pay me enough to move back to that communist country...

I used to live in NY and had a permit for several years. Could only carry for purpose permit issued for. Only purpose allowed then was target shooting and hunting. Now I live in AZ! What a difference! 2nd amendment in NY is nothing but a bad joke! Probably will be until they get the Dem. politicians kicked out. I'll never go back...really didn't get out quick enough!
I lived in Nassau County and that was the case there and in Suffolk. The rest of the state was more lenient.

I had my license since 1978. When I moved to Dutchess County I went to renew and was told that I had to re-apply. That I could only use Dutchess County residents as references and it was best if I knew these references for at least 3 years.

I finally get my references and it takes 8 months to get my appointment to be fingerprinted. It took 6 months for my background check to be complete. But then the Mental Health department was only processing 2 or 3 applications a week. I don't know if the director was pushing for more funding or had a grudge against gun ownership. At one point they were not processing any at all (they need to certify that the applicant has not been institutionalized).

So that took another 6 months. So the whole process took about 20 months plus about 3 weeks for the purchase document to be approved by a judge before I could get my first new weapon. (I had to sell my old guns when my old permit expired--including my favorite stainless steel Gold Cup.)

Plus the 3 years I had to wait until I knew my references for that long.

But there are no restrictions on the carry permit as when or where I can carry, nor are there any restrictions on the quantities of weapons I can own.

When I lived on Long Island my permit was for "target and hunting" only, and you needed a special "collectors" permit to own more than 4 guns.

It is not a state issue. Each jurisdiction has its own rules, and you can always have someone in a crucial role that can gum things up (like the Mental Health director).

kinda late chiming in here.....good luck with your app process!

one suggestion: follow up with your recommendations...make sure that
they actually send in the rec after they are contacted....it may make you seem like a pest, but people have good intentions to write and put it off and put it off....it can slow down your process tremendously....

every so often, touch base and remind them....gently....to complete the
mission so the process can move

i had to bug one of my recs for a couple months to do it....he works with me and i saw him all the time....i was so happy when he came to me with a big smile and said: it's in the mail!

Unlikely, NY is deep dark blue.

Tell me about it!! You see that little red dot in the S.W. corner?? THATS ME!

Making some headway on it any how..the deputy sherriff was going around the neighborhood a few weeks ago talking to my neighbors about me...

Well how bout that!!! Got my letter today saying i've been "approved" for my NYSCC permit. Said they were "pleased to inform me". Awfull nice of them to go ahead and grant me my second ammendment rights! All i have to do is go to the court house, give them another $10, then i can o ahead and transfer my pistols back in my name.(more money involved!)Guess all in all it was pretty quick for NYS!

For all you poor individuals that live in NY I have a suggestion.

Relocate to MA, CA, NJ:D:D:D

My mom and dad live in central new York and both got their cc permits took them about 6 months. They came down to visit me here in pa we went to the county courthouse and 40 minutes later they walked out with there non resident pa permit. What a difference between the 2 states.

Orange County is a mess, there's too many judges signing off on the permits, and your fate is determined by which judge you get. Totally unfair.
Just across the Hudson River in Putnam, we have ONE judge signing permits, and he's pro gun. The only people who don't have unrestricted permits are the new applicants, and after 6 months or so, they get their restrictions removed.
I'd like to see standardization also, but not what other counties have, I'm fine with what I have. If the other counties want to come up to our standard that's fine, but we're not being dragged backwards.

Got my original full carry NYS permit in Onondaga County when I went to college in Syracuse, NY in 1985. Transferred my permit to Putnam in 1988 and earlier this year had the new plastic credit card sized permit issued. The judge in Putnam county is indeed of a pro-gun mind set and believes in our 2nd amendment rights. He's a fair judge and doesn't make you wait a ridiculous length of time to receive your permit provided you do your part.

After having my NYS Pistol Permit for 28 months with Hunting and Target restrictions, I applied for an Unrestricted Permit. I wrote my judge a letter arguing my case...1) She told me to reapply after 18 months...2) I had passed an FBI background check and was issued a Utah CCP...3) I had taken on additional responsibilities promoting safe firearms handling as an assistant officer in charge of the West Point combat weapons team.

I was very surprised when it was approved without me having to stand before her again. It feels good having an "Unrestricted" permit in my wallet and my 60-10 tucked into my Lobogunleather IWB holster.

But...as everybody else says, NYS is run differently by county and the judge of your county can have a large impact on your carry permit.

Went Monday and picked up my permit, no restrictions no limitations except for i cant carry in NYC, where i would need to defend my-self the most...but hey finally got it! Now once back in my hands, i'll need to go and shoot..it has been almost a year since i could even go and shoot..IT SUCKS!!!
