NY State permit

As of a couple days ago..all handguns are back in my name and my possession!!! Now I feel complete!!Going into the court house in Pa to apply for my non-resident carry permit..man what a hassle!

Went Monday and picked up my permit, no restrictions no limitations except for i cant carry in NYC, where i would need to defend my-self the most...but hey finally got it! Now once back in my hands, i'll need to go and shoot..it has been almost a year since i could even go and shoot..IT SUCKS!!!

I'm curious, does 'no restrictions no limitations' mean you can carry open or concealed, or just that you don't have limitations on where or when you can carry it (within state law.)

License to carry in New York generally applied as license to carry concealed. Open carry limited to at the shooting range, in the field hunting, or if working as armed security in uniform at the workplace.

Open carry in the "wrong" location could be considered to be menacing.

ANY judge in New York, including a part-time, non-lawyer Town Justice can revoke a license to carry for any reason. So, if you have a NY license to carry, you have to be very careful.

I have had my license to carry for even longer than I have had my license to practice law, both dating back to the 1970's.

I first of all realize the OP is rather old but, after reading each and every one I feel inclined to comment. First of all in N.C. it's not a Judge that has final say it's the County Sheriff, secondly I haven't heard any mention of training in N.Y., in N.C. you must fill out all the paperwork background checks fingerprinting etc and then you MUST attend a class that usually last's about 8 hours on the laws pretaning to CC and the safety and handeling of firearms then you have a profeciency test with the firearm which requires something like 80% . Lastly you go for the fingerprinting and paperwork submission to your local Sheriff and after all is said and done if you pass all this then you wait anywhere from 60 to 90 days this depending on how busy your particular county is on processing. The fee is $80.00 there are no specific gun restrictions it's whatever you want ot carry no serial Nos tied to your permit.

In NY you must attend a NRA safety course (ironic huh!!). There you get a "packet" that you must fill out in black ink! and have the instructor(s) sign their paperwork, then you make an appointment, go to the county court house turn in your paper work along with your references if they didnt mail them, you are finger printed and your pic is taken. You then hand then $110.00, they start the background check, and wait.(4-6 months depending on the county) A deputy Sherriff goes around the neighbor hood and talks to them asking about you and you "character". You then recieve a letter written something like, "we are pleased to inform you that you have been "granted" the right to carry a gun.(really nice of them)...You then go to the county court house give them another $10.00 and $3.00 per gun to have them "put on" your permit...you cannot carry a gun if it is not on your permit...so hence..you "co-register" you and your friends and families guns on your permit.(at $3.00@ gun)..Thats pretty mcuh it in a nutshell...may vary from county to county...

Well I was off this past Monday and went to the Pa Sherriff's handed them my twenty bucks, took a pic...got home from work today and low and behold...my CCW for Pa is in my mailbox!!Man really shows how screwed up NYS is!!

Going against the tide here, I've had my NY State CCP since 1978. It was harder to obtain back then. I preferred that. I'd rather be a member of an elite club. I'd rather be the only one in a room with a gun. I'd rather be the only one in a movie theater with a gun. I'd rather be the only one at the outdoor concert at the county fair with a gun. You get my point.

My goal is not to arm the entire population. My goal is to arm me.

Some have asked why we continue to live in New York State, given the anti-gun bias by our lawmakers. Why don't we just move to Wyoming or Texas?

Here are a few reasons:

All my family, including my new grandson live here, and within a few miles of my home

I earned my living here and when I retired, I was unwilling to start over in a new state

All my friends are here, and that is important to me

My doctors, who understand our family's health challenges, are here

I help take care of my WWII veteran father, who is 88 years old, and he sure as hell ain't moving

Despite the hoops gun owners here need to jump through, ccw holders can carry in bars and restaurants without restriction

My life does not revolve around the need to carry a gun. Life has many more facets than that!

Anyway, before glibly suggesting that we move, consider all the reasons you live where you do.

Years ago I lived on LI (Suffolk County) had my CCW other then it taking almost a year to get, no issues!! The CCW application process is a hassle
in NY but with due diligence all can be good to go.
We probably would be living there to this day if it was not for my job and being forced to move due to work.
Is there a non resident ccw permit that can be obtained in NY?

There's no non-resident licenses issued in NY, but some in the Legislature are working on a reciprocity Bill.

I know a non-resident who has a NY state permit. Dunno what he went through to get it, prolly friends with some judge or something...

He's probably someone who moved and never turned his license in. NYS licenses are issued for life as there's no renewals, with the exception of NYC, Westchester, Suffolk and Nassau counties, so one can move and keep their license. It's not really legal though as you no longer have a NY residence.

I just met him a couple of weeks ago, new job. We live and work in a PA border county; he's a gun nut, Glock though. He is a PA native, and as far as I know from brief chats he has never lived in any other state. As I get to know him better I will ask how he did that.

Yes because bad guys only carry a weapon unless they have a permit....

I retired in 2001 after working in NYC & had a full carry permit while working there the last 25 + yrs. When I moved to upstate NYS in 01. It was easy getting a Non Restricted CC Permit here. I met with the local Judge got interviewed & a week later received my lifetime permit in the mail.Being retired from an armed personnel security job, Must of been the reason that I got approved so fast. Every case is different I guess.?

sorry to come into this conversation late, but want to comment that some NY staters seem to be mixing up COUNTY requirements with STATE requirements, for example:

In NY you must attend a NRA safety course (ironic huh!!). ..Thats pretty much it in a nutshell...may vary from county to county...

It's a pretty widely-held misconception that NY state requires a pistol safety class. I'm in Schuyler County and went through the permit process just a couple of years ago. There was no NRA (or other) safety course required. None. And that is for a full CCW permit. Just application fees, four references (county residents), and a background check that includes the state mental health dept review. No interviews with the judge or the sheriff. And in our county, the ONLY permit you can apply for is the CCW permit--they don't give out any of the others.

So Speedshooter quoted above is still half right--it does vary county to county. :)
