NYC info needed--------

We are going to drive to New York to visit Niagara Falls, Cooperstown and the 911 museum. We have NF and the HOF figured out but the trip to NYC has us baffled. We'd like to get close to the city and then take a bus or private transportation to the Memorial. We plan on staying in or around NYC for 2 days. We are looking for suggestions on where to stay and how to get downtown without any problems. Thanks for you help in advance.

Embassy Suites in Secaucus, NJ. Right near the mouth of the Lincoln Tunnel. New Jersey Transit Authority bus stop right outside the hotel front door drops you at the Port Authority Bus Terminal/Times Square 42nd Street Subway Station, with access to anywhere in the metroplex (ten-fifteen minute bus ride if traffic is okay). $8.50 bus fare round trip for the peasants, $4 round trip for over 65 . . .

I have quite a few people that travel to NYC.. Look at the pricing at the Marriott Times Square. Many of them are ladies and I have had no complaints or problems.

Another option is staying in NJ close to a train station. Jump on a NJ Transit train to Penn Station and Uber pool down to the WTC. You could also take the subway but Uber/Lyft are so much easier when you don't know where you are going.

You avoid Times Square that way unless that is on your agenda to visit.

Grew up in The Bronx, only Manhattan is considered NYC to natives. “The City”.
I’d go with the Midtown Marriott if the rates are decent, nothing like being able to just walk out of the hotel and be in the action.


Oh wait, you have a car, that might be an issue. If so, maybe stay in Joisey as mentioned, or in one of the cities/towns in Westchester County that has a commuter rail. IE Tarrytown, White Plains, New Rochelle.

I’m more familiar with the locations just north of the city because that’s where I lived for quite a few years, and still have family there.

The rails will take you right into Grand Central.

Southern New Jersey is almost idyllic, North New Jersey and Newark are not. Beware of your surroundings if in Newark even more so than NYC. No Broadway plays? That's all my wife and daughter want to do in NYC went they take a break from shopping and eating.

Usually crash with family when in the hood, but lately if I meet my girls in town for a theatre night out, we like the Westin Times Square. Public self-parking nearby, or valet park for about eighty bucks a day with tip.

Two things that I highly recommend.

Guided walking tour of ground zero and the memorial.
911 Ground Zero Tour – 9/11 Ground Zero Guided Tours

and

Take a sightseeing cruise. This one is great: Best of NYC: Daily Complete Manhattan Cruise | See All of New York | Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises
If you do this, upgrade to Premier tickets. Much nicer experience.

We've had great luck with VRBO when staying in Manhattan, but we were looking for 2 bedroom.

I second this advice. Have stayed at the Marriot in Times Square with the family three times. Great hotel. Another benefit...one block away from Carmine's for an Italian dinner and Junior's for a cheesecake dessert. Quick subway ride downtown for the memorial.

Double like on Carmine’s, yummy.
First time I ever went in the waitress warned me about separate entrees. One takes care of two.
Yes it’s sort of a chain, with places in Atlantic City, DC, and Vegas, but this ain’t no Olive Garden.
Make reservations.
